@IRunForFun: ilovermont! I'm here for a long weekend visiting my family and would move to Montpelier or Mad River Valley in a heartbeat. It's magical and my heart is here.

Interesting question! I would love to stay where we're at now. I've been here for my entire adult life and it just feels like home now (in a way that my original hometown never did). I don't know if it will be possible in the long-run with work, though, as we are both in pretty specialized industries and are far from guaranteed to keep the jobs we're in now. I think I could be happy in a lot of places...

Another Westchester resident here :). We like where we live. Even though we'd love to be back in the city, logistically we find it much easier to raise a family here. I'm from Long Island so we're only about an hour from there and very easy access to NYC.

Nope. I love the region we live in, and the close proximity to my ILs, but hate living in a suburb, especially one that requires 35+ minutes of driving each way to do anything outside of hanging out with family. We are planning to move further north, closer to the city, but I'd live in the middle of it if it fit our life right now.

With all the craziness happening around the world, I don't want to be anywhere else but my lazy little Swedish town. A few years ago, I longed to move back home to SoCal, but that's completely out of my system now

We just moved to a suburb of Chicago and I have to say we are loving it here. Lots to do and walk to and very family friendly!!

We live in the east bay burbs and I really like it, but I still dream of moving elsewhere. It's 30 minutes to SF, the weather's great (though I don't love the crazy summer heat), the people are nice, the access to hiking/camping/outdoor activities is great. But we're more at home in a more urban/liberal environment. I lived for a few years in England/Europe and still have some very dear friends there. My ideal location is Cambridge, UK or maybe zone 2/3 London, but moving overseas at this point is pretty unlikely to happen.

I live in New Albany, IN, a small town right across the river from Louisville, KY - so it has a small town feel and we can walk everywhere, but we have all the benefits of a big city, too. We both have family here and I've been here since I was 10, but I would move if the circumstances (job, home, etc) were right.
I'd love to move back to Florida or out west to Colorado or Arizona or even out of the country. I'd be happy to even move around as my kids grow so they can see as much of the world as possible! If I could convince my husband to live in an RV, I'd do it in a heartbeat!

Very happy living in CA. A couple years back we seriously considered a move to the PNW because of the lower COL, beautiful nature, and cooler weather, but it's out of my system now. We have such strong ties to family and friends here, the food is good, and there's lots to do. We'll probably stick around until our kids are grown, then who knows...

@YogiRunner: I live in Vermont and can confirm that it is a magical place. Montpelier is a great place to live, too. We live further north and more rurally now and love it.
I highly doubt we will ever leave vermont. We are in our starter home now, and really like the rural town/area we are in. There are a few other towns that might be slightly more ideal for us (like those with more of a downtown, although we would still live outside of town) but it will depend on where we end up finding the best house (or land to build) when we move in 5-6 years.

I live on the other side of the river from @tlcbaby and while I love Louisville, I'd love to move about 45 minutes south to my hometown. We've also talked about moving back to our college town, but jobs are scarce and nothing has come open in years. Kentucky is a beautiful place and we love it here.

I'm not at all tied to where we live, but DH is from the west coast area we live in & all his family is here. I'd love to move back to CO & be closer to my family. We have also talked about an international move, but I have no idea where or when we'd do this. DH would like to go more rural, & I'm pretty adaptable & could be happy with rural (but some amenities within 30mins or so), suburban, or a nice walkable city.

We live in a rural farming town (pop. 1,500) with a fantastic school system. We live on 20 acres and have done tons of work with landscaping and planting (tons!) of trees. It is our forever spot, but we are still trying to decide what additions will make our house just right.
We work 25 minutes away in a popular tourist location (pop. 15K) with plenty more resources than our small town offers, so that makes it doable.
ETA: All that to say, I wouldn't rather be anywhere else

@Silva: Nice! It sounds like you're near my parents. They're about an hour north of Montpelier next to the Lamoille River. We're about to do our first date night without the kid in Stowe!

We live in northern Virginia about an hour west of DC. It is ok, but I really do not want to live here forever. We have no friends of family in the area, and the cost of living is really high.
Our dream location would be Raleigh, NC. We lived there before we moved up here, and we loved it. We only moved up here because DH couldn't find a job in that area. We would move back in a heartbeat if he could find employment down there. Almost all of our friends live in that area, and we would me much closer to our family.

We live in NYC now because I'm doing a phd program here, and we definitely don't want to live here for the long run. Too expensive, schools are competitive and/or expensive, we have dogs and really need a yard. The job market for my field is really difficult and you have to go wherever you find a job (if you're lucky...) I grew up in a Midwestern college town and it'd be my dream to move back! Friendlier neighborhoods, amazing public schools, muuuuch lower col, my family is there.... Plus the university there is amazing so it'd be a dream job too. But it's a long shot!

We are in MA and while I couldn't imagine living in another part of the country long term, I could see us moving to another town. DH and I always planned to move close to the water but when we outgrew our condo DH's job was (and still is) too far from the coast. We are only 30 minutes away but I grew up right on the water and crave the sea breeze all summer. Overall we are happy with our town so if DH stays at his job long term maybe we will think about a vacation cottage once I go back to work and the kids are all in school.

@YogiRunner: wow, probably very near! That just about describes our location, too
Enjoy Stowe! It's a great time of year to visit here!

Nope. DH is in grad school so we will move when he is done.
We currently live about 30 minutes from a major midwestern city. Ideally DH will get a job in the area and we will buy a house in a closer suburb. Realistically we are likely to be moving states though.

We live in an area that is having a huge population explosion. It's not my ideal place to live, but with DH's career we will be stuck for another 20 years. We can reevaluate then maybe and see where life takes us, since I imagine we won't have so much family nearby anymore.

@youboots: we LOVED your town!
We love where we live—we grew up in the area and our entire families are here. That being said, we'd love to live out west/PNW and finally have some topography! The Midwest is so flat and the people of the PNW seem to be my kind of people.

@Mrs. J: you inspired this thread! Glad you enjoyed your visit. So bummed our house was sick and we could not visit.

We live in NYC and the plan was never to stay long-term. But somehow we've been here for 8 years and counting! The longer we stay, the harder it is to think about leaving but our apartment is small (750 sq ft) and the cost of living is exorbitant. If/when we do move, it will either be to a northern suburb or NYC (Westchester or Rockland counties) or somewhere in New England, preferably Western Massachusetts (Northhampton/Springfield). It will happen eventually but I'm still working on my doctorate degree and want to be finished before we leave.

We generally like where we live, except that we're too far from family. But my DH has a very niche job, so the prospects of going elsewhere are very limited. I doubt we will stay here when we retire, unless DD does -- we'll probably move wherever she is. I do dream of living somewhere tropical, though.

When I visit my mom, I'll watch house hunters international with her. I always find it super interesting when there is a younger couple with kids who sells everything they own, packs up, and moves to some exotic location where they love the lifestyle, like the Seychelles or Vanuatu or wherever. I had some acquaintances who did something similar, decided to leave successful careers in the U.S. and started a craft brewing company in Southeast Asia. I don't think I'd ever have the nerve to do it - I like my life here and living in the U.S. offers lots and lots of advantages, plus if I up and left my career to do something like that there'd be no getting it back if I didn't like the new life, in other words, it seems pretty irreversible. But I do think it's an intriguing thing to think about...

Yes! I love our area. Close to the water, freeways, malls, and big city. I am not a big city person because I love having a big yard and a driveway, but I like being close to it. Our city is perfect, IMO.
