We had chore lists that rotated on a regular basis. Things were broken up into three similar jobs (like someone set/cleared the table, someone washed the dishes, someone dried and put them away. Someone collected all the trash, someone sorted the recycling, someone fed the pets. Etc.). That way no one could complain their chores were worse than the others because we all ended up doing them all.
Also, we received an allowance, but it was made clear that was NOT payment for doing chores. We did chore because everyone in a family is expected to contribute. We got an allowance because our parents wanted us to have *some* money to get used to the value of money and what to do with it. But there were other jobs that weren't regular chores that we were all still expected to chip in on (working in the garden, mowing the lawn, stacking fire wood, etc)
