@Corduroy: is he Asian?

I'm Asian and I don't know about recovering faster = looking made up in public, but I know for Koreans and Chinese cultures, there's a strong tradition of post-partum recovery (the month-long lie in you hear about). In Korea, its fairly common to go stay with your mother for a good month while she cooks super nutritious for you and helps care for the baby while you rest and recuperate. Women of greater means also transfer directly from a hospital to a mother-baby hotel of sorts where they can stay for a month or two. They're quite nice - there's usually a fully staffed nursery you can send your baby to between feedings to sleep, there's access to lactation consultants, hospital grade pumps, nutrient dense meals, etc. The idea is grounded in the idea that you will have life-long health problems if you do not invest time and energy to recovering after the trauma of childbirth. My mom stayed with me for 3 weeks (I sent her home) and she basically cooked, cleaned, took the baby when I needed a nap, and fed me gallons and gallons of seaweed soup to purify and detox my body. She also made me stay inside as much as possible because apparently catching a draft will make you ill. I have to imagine this helps women in those cultures recover better.

I'm asian and I certainly did not recover faster. I actually pushed myself too hard and might have been why I didn't recover as normally. Although, if my mom was around PP, I'm sure she would have yelled at me for trying to do so much stuff. I didn't follow the standard Asian sitting tradition (is that what that is called). Though, I can any non-asian mom telling her daughter to take it easy after giving birth.

@hb3233: you don't even want to know how much chicken I've eaten after my two kids. And it's a specific breed..not just like Perdue from the grocery store. Organic, no hormones/injection, free range was a acceptable substitute for my mom. 🙄
