Do any of you bees stay at home with your little ones, and care for others in your home? How did you go about finding daycare clients? Did you need any sort of small business license?
When I'm finished my maternity leave, I'm trying to figure out a way to be a SAHM, while still making money. How did it work out for you?

I know that in CA, you have to be licensed through the state, background checked, etc. Then you would need a business license.

I tried babysitting for a friends LO, but it didn't work out. I think it was mostly the kid though, and not the job in general. I know here you have to be licensed to run a daycare in your home. My sister runs an in home daycare and it was fairly easy for her to get licensed. I know her home had to be up to a certain code though too. I think in home day cares are a great way to stay at home but make some money too, as long as you have patience

The lady I am using is not licensed and watches 4 kids. That's totally legal in my state; she still has to claim the income as a business, but she doesn't have to deal with state licensing issues as long as it's 4 kids or less and there's only 1 baby under 1 years old. Her own kids are grown up, though...

I have looked into starting a daycare and a dayhome (I'm in Canada thought so it's probably a little different). I know there are lots of dayhomes that aren't licensed and they can only have a small amount of children. Licensed day homes can have more but yes you do need a small business type license. You might even want to check to see if you need any child care experience. (I took daycare courses).

I don't think it's law in my state that you HAVE to have a license to run a small daycare. However I think it ups your credibility.
As for finding clients:
- Post daycare posts around town - local coffee shops and delis and maybe with some churches/schools?
-Spread word of mouth via friends/facebook that you're willing to watch a few kids and have openings
- create a starter website with a little information - pictures of playspace, a sample routine/schedule, food yes/no, ages of kids you have openings for, about you and your child, etc
- Post your "daycare" on Care.com, sitter city and nannies4hire

@redsmarties: I do. I watch 1 little girl and have been since she was 6 weeks she is now 2.5 years old. I have been a back up sitter for a few families as well. I am not liscened and don't plan to be, The state I live in does not require me to be. I am first aid and cpr certified and get recertified every year. I found my family threw craigslist which is the norm around here.

In my state you have to be a licensed daycare provider but I know of several people who watch friends' kids without having a license. For me personally I would want to have a license because it would make me feel better in terms of liability if anything ever happened and I feel like it would give me the room to be more official with things. I have seen situations go very, very wrong when someone is watching friends' kids because the person watching the kids is expected to do xyz and jump through all kinds of hoops to please the other person who is paying them.

@.twist.: I'm in Canada too (Ontario). I THINK if its 3 kids or less, you're okay, but I have to look into it some more.
Thanks for the input! I think it might be great...but we'll have to see how things go.
