i think so, especially if you have a monitor. i guess it depends on your kid though. I can see it working for us because DS is 3 years old now and he stays in bed until we come to him every morning (and after nap). He knows we can hear him on the monitor and when he wakes he will call "mommy daddy" and one of us goes. We also hear if he wakes during the night. If he was getting out of bed and trekking to us, i might feel different.

Honestly, I'd be comfortable with a master on the main floor and kids upstairs from day 1. But I wouldn't want master upstairs and kids on main.

I don't think it's a big deal, especially in the age of baby monitors. We bought a new home last year, and our master is on the first floor while the others are upstairs. The girls were 2 and 4 months at the time. I was more put off by the one-stories we saw that had secondary bedrooms at the front of the house, personally. Our older daughter comes down in the morning or if she needs something, and the baby is still in a crib. No problems here!

I'd be ok if the master bedroom was on the ground floor and the kids were upstairs, probably from a fairly early age, but I would not be comfortable with any of my LOs on the ground floor whilst we were upstairs.

I don't know where I heard this, and it may not always work for us, but I've heard the rule of thumb is that you should always be between your kids and the front door. That may be a bit neurotic but it's what we go by......

It's common for master bedrooms to be on the first floor and all other bedrooms upstairs here. It's hard to sell a two story home that has a master upstairs. I would be comfortable with DD being on upstairs while I was down as soon as I was comfortable with her being in her own room. We moved DD to her room at 6 weeks. We have a one story, but if we had an upstairs I still would have moved her.

I would be comfortable (with monitors) if we were on the main floor and they were upstairs as soon as they were out of our room. However, I have very little desire to have a 2 story home, but I could see our daughters being in the basement of a ranch style home if they choose.

Our LO has always been on a different floor (since we moved her out of our room at 4 months). Honestly, it's fine. We still use a monitor (she's now 27 months) and she's still in her crib, so I don't really worry. Once we move her to a bed, we will probably need to do something so she can't open her door, since I don't want her to try to climb the stairs to our room in the dark.

We have a tall, narrow house, so she is on the 2nd floor and we are on the third. I wouldn't want her on the ground floor.

We've been on different floors since she was 2.5 and we haven't had any issues.

@pmrlady: we moved to a house like this when DD was 3 1/2 and I was 32 weeks pregnant. So DD got the downstairs bedroom, DH and I were upstairs in the master and the baby got the other upstairs bedroom. I was a little worried but it has really been fine. We did invest in a good double video monitor which helps. DD will call for us and will come upstairs even in the dark on her own sometimes. I think it will be fine!

The same age as I feel comfortable having him sleep in another room, which is 6 months for us. I do keep DS locked in his room (with a monkey lock), with a video monitor since moving him out of the crib. I would be okay with unlocking his door somewhere in the 3-4 year range, but we are not there yet. If the child were downstairs and the master up, I would install out-of-reach deadbolts on all external doors. Almost all of the two story houses here have the master downstairs and all other bedrooms upstairs.

I guess 6 months which is when we moved LO to her own room two floors away. Granted we were in a tri-level open style loft so could hear everything. She's again on the bottom floor (we're up one floor) with no issues. But once we move her to a big girl bed we'll have to figure out how to limit her from roaming until she's closer to 3-4 years old.

I never have understood the issue here, personally. Our bedroom is in the attic, and jut daughter moved into her ground floor bedroom at eight months. These days she just comes upstairs when she wakes at night.

Our apartment is a two bedroom duplex with one bedroom on each floor. He moved to his bedroom at 2 months. We haven't had any issues. He's now in a toddler bed and most mornings when he wakes up he comes out of his room and comes upstairs to get us. We deadbolt the front door but he has full access to the rest of the apartment.

We will be experiencing this soon...we have two bedrooms upstairs and one downstairs. Right now our master is upstairs but we will move downstairs so the new baby can be in our current room. The other option would be for my son to be downstairs, but he's not 4 until June and I just wasn't comfortable with that. We plan to use monitors in both kids' rooms for awhile. I will admit, I'm not totally a fan of the situation but it is what it is. The house I grew up in, I was downstairs and my parents and sister were upstairs. However it was a tiny Cape and you could hear anything no matter where you were in the house!
