It's pretty hard to sleep in our house (bedrooms on the 3rd floor) if the main floor (where the thermostat is located) is more than 79, so we usually turn on the AC when it gets warmer than that (we set the AC at 78).

We try to sleep with our windows open, but that doesn't really work for DD (because I am paranoid).

FWIW, we did an experiment a few years ago to see how we could cut our utility costs. For our house, it is cheapest to keep our AC on all the time at a set (fairly high) temperature. For heat, the opposite is true - it is much cheaper to turn the heat way down (to like 60) at night and while we are at work, and then crank it up (to 72 because I am always cold!) in the evenings.

I think I'm sensitive mostly to humidity, not heat. So if it feels like I'm struggling to breathe even with the air being circulated through the vents and the fans on, then I'm turning on the AC.

Which means here in TN I've had it on for over a month because its been so. muggy. I usually keep it set at 75 or 76. I can't imagine it being 80 or 85 unless there's a pretty good circulation going on!

For us it is less about the temperature and more about the humidity. I think last week we turned it on and it was only like 74 in the house but it was crazy humid whereas last night was a lot warmer but there was a nice breeze and no humidity.

We turn it on when it gets to about 80. If we let it get too hot, it will work and work and the house will never cool off. We also have a really old house. We usually turn it off at night and open everything up and put all the fans on to cool the house off.

Above 76 and the a/c is on or the hubby will be complaining up the wall!!

Low 80s, I do not like being hot when I sleep. I'm willing to spend a little more to stay comfortable. However, we keep our house set at like 76-77...so it doesn't really run all the time.

We live in Texas, so it is on for the majority of the year. I hate it being hot in the house, so we keep it around 74 degrees.
Last night the AC wasn't working well for some reason, and it was 78 degrees, I felt like I was melting in bed!

I live in Virginia, and it's often more a question of humidity than temperature. If the humidity is really high, we'll keep the AC on so we can feel comfortable.

I think when it its 78 we turn it on. I don't open the windows in the LO's room at night because there can be the occasional dog barking, cars honking/alarm going off and I really don't want to disturb her sleep. Plus I put her into long sleeve pjs and a sleep sack because she's pretty sensitive to getting cold so I know I need to regulate her room temperature to keep it cool but not cold. I turn it down to about 75. Her room is the smallest room in the house so it gets a lot cooler in there faster and longer before some other rooms get cooler so I keep that in mind when setting the temp. I'd say 75 is pretty much perfect around here except when the humidity really kicks in .... then I turn it down a few more degrees.

If LO's room is 80+, we turn it on.

78 is too hot for me. We only have 1 ac unit for the whole house so the upstairs is blazing by that point. We have our electricity on the budget plan so I don't worry too much. I know what to expect

I've already begged my DH to turn the AC on. Cannot stand the heat. Have been more sensitive too since being pregnant. Turned it on when it got to 70s -- been on for a few weeks now

Wow, I guess I'm the oddball on this thread. Our house is almost always 70 degrees spring, summer and fall so we have the a/c cranked up non-stop once it is warm. It's been on for many weeks now. I get hot very easily and wouldn't be able to function in a house hotter than 73 or 74 degrees an especially in the high 70's. My husband likes it cooler, too, and my toddler gets warm very easily as well, so we always keep the house cool for him, too.
