How long does it take for maternity leave eligibility to kick in?
I got transferred to a different location (retail) and I've stuck it out for about 6 months but I just really hate it. My issue, however, is that I'm 15 weeks pregnant and am fighting the idea of starting a new job while pregnant. I don't want to lose the chance for leave, and also am afraid a new company would not be too keen on the idea of a pregnant new hire.
Anyone have any experience with this?

Federal law is that you have to work a minimum of 12 months with your current employer to qualify for FMLA (12 weeks of job-protected leave). If your employer offers you something on top of FMLA, they will have their own rules. At my current job, I qualify for short-term disability on my 31st day of employment.

My work followed the federal policy of 12 months at full time hours. I had a friend who got pregnant right away and delivery about ten months after hire. They let her take what she had under short term disability (6 weeks) and then she had to come back as she was not FMLA eligible. Another friend found out she was pregnant right after starting a new job and the same thing applies. But we are in the nonprofit world which seems somewhat stingy with benefits.

I had to have 2,000$ in insurable earnings in the qualifying period (52 weeks).

12 months here.. but they will make exceptions (rarely)... like if your due date was a 12 months past your start date and you went early.

My short term disability starts about 6 weeks into new job but FMLA takes 12 months...but is be ineligible for short term disability if already pregnant. In most circumstances, not a good time to change jobs.

You can always apply for new jobs and negotiate the leave if you get an offer. Just make sure you get the offer including the leave in writing.
