Charlize Theron named her new baby girl August, which is happens to be our favorite name for a boy. When you think of the name do you think unisex, boy or girl?

I think boy.
ETA: it also makes me think of The Secret Life of Bees.

I definitely think boy, but it works for a girl, too?
I know a little Augusta.

I definitely think boy - seems to be a trend right now to use squarely "boy" names for girls.

This is definitely a boys name to me. One of my biggest pet peeves right now as we are trying to name our son- the trend of naming girls names that are traditionally boy names!

I assume a boy, but I actually really like it for a girl! All the other month names are for girls so why not.

I think boy but I like it for a girl too! Funny how April, May and June are firmly girl but August isn't.

I definitely think boy. If you wanted to differentiate more, maybe Augustus or Augustine?

just by reading the OP i thought unisex because it seemed normal that she named a girl August and then when u said it was boy pick for you, i realized i have heard that name as a boy before (I think in the movie, August Rush).

I've known both a little girl and a little boy named August. I like it for either. It didn't seem too boyish at all for the girl.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Love it and we were SUPER close to choosing this for our son (EDD 11/19)!! I think it is pretty for a girl though too now that you mention it!

@MamaCate: Augustine has this weird male/ female thong going for it. On one hand it's like Justin and Justine and own the other there's a St. Augustine who was definitely a man. I wonder how a nick name would play out for a girl August- Gussy reminds with hussy?
@californiadreams: my husband suggested it because of the TV show "Girl Meets World." The kid bro is an August/ Augie
I think for a boy it's a classic name per my search of famous people with the name and for a girl it would be kind of hipster. Who knows I may end up loving it enough for it to be "the name" not just the "boy's name."
@wrkbrk: great choice. What's your story behind the name?
pomelo / 5084 posts
@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We just liked it - and especially liked Gus as a nickname. And we liked the initials we would have had with August as a first name choice - would have honored both my grandparents (jewish tradition). That said we are going with a family name on DW's side - Cooper.

I know a girl named August so I voted girl. I should have voted unisex though. Duh, I somehow skipped that option. Definitely works for a boy too.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: yes my first thought was St. Augustine but typing it out it does look a little feminine. I think if you love August you should go for it since you can't predict the future for name trends. And it is a classically male name in my opinion.

It makes me think of August Wilson-- which wasn't his first name by birth, but still a male name.

I only think boy, and it's a family name for us, so we are thinking of using it in the future!

@Ms. RV: after my husband floated the name I went searching for its meaning/ famous people and liked it even more because of August Wilson! I still have yet to read something of his though.

I know two little boys named August. I think of it as a boy name.

I think of it as a boy's name but it does sound good for a girl too. It's not too confusing like naming John or James for a girl.

Boy but I wouldn't be surprised if it now became more girly. I'd still use it though if it were a front runner.

Boy. I watch Once Upon a Time and Pinnochios name is August. I guess I can see it as a girl name but the only thing I can think of is a friend I have whose name is Augustina.

I think boy, I've known 2 boys named August (Augie) in my life.
But I do tend to like boy names for girls so I kinda like it!
