DD is 6 months old and sleeps in our bedroom because we only have a one bedroom unit. I never bought a baby video monitor since we live in such a small space. If I'm in the living room while she is sleeping I'll just check up on her from time to time and at night I'll get out of bed to check up on her too. Sometimes she'll cry at night and I'll have to get out of bed and shine this flash light thing on her to see what the deal is. Our room is pitch black because we have black out shades so I need some sort of light to see her. If her eyes are closed I just let her be and she will fall back asleep. But sometimes her eyes are open and when she sees me with the bright light shining in her face she'll cry even harder until I pick her up. I'll pick her up and try to rock her back to sleep but she will cry louder and louder until I nurse her back to sleep. Ugh. I'm wondering if I had a baby monitor next to me if that would be helpful. That way she doesn't actually SEE me and want me to pick her up and I have a peace of mind she doesn't REALLY need me (like having her limbs stuck in between the slits of something). Or do you think it's silly to have a monitor when we're all in the same room?

We have DS in our large walk in closet.. and we have a video monitor for him. I like having video so I can watch him when he naps and can also see if he's sleeping when he makes noises.

I did that too. We're in different rooms but in a very small house so we didn't think we needed one. But then LO would get her limbs caught in the crib and cry, and sometimes she would just cry just because. If she wasn't stuck and I checked on her she'd get even more upset after seeing me. So we got a video monitor. No regrets.

My sister had a video monitor in her one bedroom, but the baby slept in the dining room nook, not the bedroom. She liked it because she could see why he was crying without him seeing her-- if he saw her, even in the dining room, he was up and wanting to be held no matter what.
In your situation, though, what if you got a nightlight or a very soft hand held light with a low wattage, so it wouldn't be bright and wake the baby up so much? That would certainly be a cheaper option before going all in with the video monitor.

You just have to be careful how close the camera is to the monitor if that makes sense. When ours gets too close, it whistles and it's horrible! So just be sure there's enough distance between the two!

@chopsuey119: @artbee: Exactly! When DD was younger I never felt like I NEEDED one but now that she's more mobile I'm always wondering what she's doing in the crib and why she's making noises. DH and I were watching a movie in the living room over the weekend and I had to keep pausing it to check up on her even though she wasn't crying...I was just paranoid.
@foodnerd81: I had no idea how expensive video monitors were until now! Oh my goodness. Yes, a soft light would be a cheaper option but I think DD would still see me and cry. Sometimes I sneak in the bedroom during the day when she's napping (and it's not that dark), she will see me and I'm like oh crap and try to duck but it's too late!

@Mrs. Chen: Yeah, if she's going to cry if she sees you at all-- I think the monitor is the way to go. Maybe you could find one on Craigslist or some other listserve. They are so expensive but it seems like they have potential to make life so much easier.

We used to live in a 2/2 and DS was literally six steps away from our bed, across the hall in the other room. I didn't think we would need a monitor. When they went on major sale on Cyber Monday, I couldn't help but snatch one up. SO glad! It is just so comforting to have and when I am doing dishes or whatever in the kitchen, I don't have to be constantly straining to figure out if I can hear him or not.
