You can have a meet the baby party when your LO is born. I didn't have a shower either, but I still got tons of gifts.

I love the idea of a meet the baby party! That way it is something you put on, can invite all your new friends and old friends, and get to celebrate your baby!

I'm in the same boat! Both my family and DH's family are literally on the OTHER SIDE OF THE COUNTRY! And, we just moved here in August, so I would never expect my new friends to throw me a shower or even get me/the baby any gifts.

I do like the idea of a meet the baby party! But who knows how long it'll be after the little guy is born that I'll feel up to hosting a party at my house...lol

I would make sure your registry is searchable on the sites where you are registered. If people want to give you a gift, they will give you a gift if you have a shower or not! My SIL had this same problem and she did not have a shower. She had tons of stuff sent to her once the baby was born as a congrats! gift.

I'm kind of in the same boat but at least I have my Mom and Dad here. My extended family is all across the East and Mid West and my friends are spread out. I have a few here but none that would throw a shower (I only have one friend with kids and the others don't plan on having kids or are jealous of pregnant friends). I think my Mom will throw a shower and we'll invite everyone far away and near and if people can come? GREAT! If not, that is fine, too.

@Clementine: You wouldn't fly home for a shower? I know my friends and family would still want to do something for me regardless of distance.

some people have already asked me if i have a registry. i say you set one up and when people ask, you can tell them where you're registered.

i too like the "welcome baby" party idea. then you wouldn't mind so much that people are coming out of their way to see you and the baby.

Set up a registry and if people ask then you can graciously let them know. Someone I know was in your position and sent us all an email stating that since she lives far away, she is unable to have a shower and was therefore having her own "online" shower for her unborn child and to please select a gift that we could purchase for them. It was a huge turn off.

Ok, what about this: a virtual baby shower. It sounds a little out there and I'm not sure I would even do it myself but what about sending out invitations or even just e-vites and have a big group skype date or g-chat party or something along those lines? Perhaps someone could create a couple of virtual baby shower games or the e-vite could encourage people to dress for a theme (pj party, going out attire, fancy dress, gender colors if you know what you're having or have them dress in their guess (boy or girl) if you don't know what you're having, etc.) Everyone could offer advice or mention a favorite baby book or whatever. I think there's some potential here but you might think it's super chessy..just a suggestion.

We are doing a meet the baby party for local friends. We had a very small shower with my husband's family a few weeks ago, it was nice, and I hate being the center of attention.

My cousin's wife had a distance baby shower that was really fun, we all mailed stuff to arrive on one weekend and called her and skyped- very cool idea for someone far away who also hates being the center of attention.
