Question for experienced babywearers... till what age do you carry your kids in a wrap/carrier? Are there carriers for 17-month-olds? I use a stroller if we have to get somewhere fast, but I wonder if there's a better option that's not so big and heavy!

I still wear my 7-year-old on rare occasions. If they are old enough to be carried, even just piggyback, you can wear them. Heck-- you can wear an adult for short spurts if you feel like it!
Wraps (woven wraps, not stretchy) are suitable for all ages. One of the things I love about them. Many soft structured carriers, like mei teis, Tulas, Kinderpacks, etc. have different sizing options depending on your needs. Ring slings can also be used during the toddler years and don't take up too much space. For a quick option on the go I like to pack a size three wrap. I can still do front, back, and hip carries, but it isn't a ton of fabric to try to carry around, and it barely scrapes the ground (my current favorite is 3.5M and I am 5'6") when I put the middle marker centered on one of my shoulders (so both ends are dangling towards the ground, like an inverted 'u'). That means I don't have to worry as much about other people stepping on it as I'm trying to get her up, getting it dirty or gross dragging in a puddle or something, or stepping on it myself-- wrapping in public, especially back-wrapping, can generate lots of attention. We have never owned a stroller, and I don't miss having one.

@Mama Bird: still wear him all the time at 28 lbs and 16 months in a Tula toddler! We both love it

I still wear LO at 22 months (just 24lbs though) in a ring sling. We never use our stroller; I just wear her or let her walk.

I still wear my almost 3 year old 28 pound dude in a beco soft structured. I just ordered my tula toddler and it is on it's way I am so excited.

I'm still using a beco Gemini and mei tai at 17 months , 20 pounds. I plan on getting a toddler Tula this summer and figuring out how to use my ring sling that I bought months ago!

The ergo! I can still carry my 19 month old in it at 39 weeks pregnant! All be it a bit less comfortably then before, but if your not pregnant, it's a great solution. I watched a few YouTube videos to learn how to swing him from my hip to my back on my own. It took a few tries at home over the bed with a mirror to learn but it's easy now and he thinks it's hilarious.

I back carry my 2 year old (30 lbs) in the Ergo and in a Evenflo framed carrier- it's a good workout! I had to stop after being pregnant for several months because it was just too much for my poor balance, but we wear both boys when things are super crowded or for longer hikes.

I agree I carried my daughter on my back until after she was 2 with a basic ergo. But there are other soft structured carriers meant for larger toddlers.

I just wore my 29 pound almost 2 year old(in 2 weeks) the other day while out shopping. he loves to be on my back in the Beco.

Our LO is not 1 yet, but he already weighs almost 25 lbs and is really tall, so I feel qualified to answer, lol! We have an Onya carrier, which is so ergonomic it's ridiculous. It's a soft structured carrier designed to carry up to 45 lbs-I wear LO on my front, DH wears him on his back, the baby loves it! He often falls asleep in it-it's magic. I imagine using it way past 1 or even 2 years old.

Just thought I'd chime in again briefly because I wore Lorelei (age two) tonight because she had entered that fabulous manic stage of I am not ever sleeping and you can't make me. I popped her up on my back and tidied her room some and we visited and I sang to her about the Easter Bunny (at her request) and she told me all the different things we had to sing about him. And in 20 minutes she was OUT. I'm pretty sure that without the wrap she would have been awake for another hour, easy.

I still carry LO who is 14 months in the Ergo. She loves it in there. I don't see us stopping any time soon.

Thank you for the advice, everyone! I'm so glad to hear that it's possible to carry a toddler that way - I'll definitely try this out once I figure out what kind of carrier would be good!

I still carry my 2-year-old sometimes. Back carry with my Tula.

I'm pregnant and still wear my 32lb, 2 yr old. Either in a wrap or a toddler tula. Also have a custom toddler MT and a pod that are both toddler suitable

we use our ergo for our 18 month old 24lb LO. I am thinking about getting a tula though...I wonder if it would be more comfortable and he would be happier about being worn.

@hilsy85: I would see if you could try a Kinderpack and a Tula. I have recently been converted to Kinderpack since trying one. I think as they get bigger sized options that offer a toddler or preschool version can be more comfortable for everyone just because the sizing is more generous. I have also heard people using their Ergos through the toddler years, too, so if you can try before purchasing that would be best. Right now both Tula and Kinderpack are holding almost 100% of their value, so if you did end up choosing to buy and didn't love it you would likely be able to have a cash-neutral outcome. Pretty close to it, anyway.

We use our Beco for our 16 month old 19lb LO. She likes it, but we use it mostly when she needs to have a nap and we're out and about and don't have room for the stroller. It's a nice compact option for shopping too!

I still wear J when we're on the T or at a Red Sox game, anywhere where I think I might have to carry him for an extended period.
& Jewel wears her son Kase, he's almost 3
