I already googled and found that I should use 3 boxes and bake at 325 BUT several people said not to use Pam because it would still stick in this pan - what do I use then?? Couldn't find that answer

@Mamaof2: Wilton makes stuff. I can't remember what it is called though.

@Smurfette: OK I bought the pan from Michaels yesterday - will see if they have it

I always use shortening and put either flour or cocoa powder (depends on the type of cake) on top of it.

@Mamaof2: I've never had an issue with PAM, but I use the PAM baking one. If you really want to prevent sticking, I would use 2 sheets of parchment paper perpendicular to each other so you can lift out the cake and peel off the parchment. You should still grease the sides of the parchment so it doesn't stick to your cake, but you can just use whatever fat you would use for your cake anyways. So if you're using oil, I would rub a little bit all over the parchment paper.

I always use shortening and sometimes sprinkle flour over top of it. Get a can of Crisco, it lasts forever.

@aegie: That's what I use Pam for baking (with the flour)
@mediagirl: @avivoca: I do have Crisco!
Ok one more question for decorating - do you think this will be hard to do??? Dark grey on top light on bottom with a blue streak - In my head I think I can do it but in reality....??? LOL
I have the toppers -
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Mamaof2: that looks like it has been sprayed on. How are you planning on doing it?
squash / 13208 posts
@mediagirl: I thought so too! That blue line isn't straight - def looks like it was sprayed! I will see if I can find blue spray! The directions that came with it said to color frosting dark gray for the top and light for the bottom - so I have white frosting and bought black coloring. The directions actually don't mention the blue at all.....

Pam for baking has never let me down! Just make sure you don't turn the pan upside down too soon, and also don't wait too long (i think like 10 minutes is ok?). And invert with your rack or plate directly on top of the pan...
If you don't want to use spray you might need to color your icing in varying shades to get the ombre effect??

The best thing is Bakers Joy!!! Or use canola oil and dust with flour. Cake slides right out!
You could do the frosting with buttercream and just make it swirly

Also if you don't want the hassle is it really too late to order the cake with a spray effect and then use your own toppers?
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@Mamaof2: hahaha. I have never sprayed a cake before! That will be so cool. I think the entire top was sprayed on top of white frosting. At least that's what it looks like from the picture. Maybe you could get black spray and spray closer to the cake for the darker area and further away for the lighter gray color? And yeah, I think you need blue, too...

@T-Mom: that's what I was going to do but.... am I that talented?
@blackbird: can you get that at the grocery store?
honeydew / 7488 posts
@Mamaof2: I think with the cake toppers, you already have a win, and what the icing looks like won't even matter. I think anyway..
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@Mamaof2: bakers spray? Yeah! By the oils with a white body and blue lid

I wouldn't worry about getting spray, especially if you already have the icing and food coloring to make blue and black.
I wouldn't worry about following the design you posted, but just make a general black and grey swirled sky and then put extra white icing in a plastic baggie, snip off a tiny corner, and pipe tiny dots as stars.
Kind of like the background of this cake

@TemperanceBrennan: oh thanks! yes my cake will def look more like that one -no way can I get it as smooth as the one I posted!
@T-Mom: your right - and all DS cares about is the topper and the Darth Vader candle holder I have

By spray are we talking about something to keep the cake from sticking? I never have good luck with spray so I always use parchment paper and for a cake this big I definitely would, just for peace of mind.

Thanks all - one last question (if anyone is still reading this thread)
Baking strips? yay or nay? I saw that you can DIY with a wet washcloth

Wilton also makes spray color. It's super easy.

I love Wilton cake release and have used the spray colors too. If you do decide to go with the spray color, do it near an open window or in a well ventilated area.
