I would really like to enroll in a ballet (for beginners seeing as how I haven't taken a class since kindergarten!) class for adults as a form of exercise. Any ballet bees out there? Given the area in which I live, I may not be able to find a class...any alternative or video recommendations?

Oh I would so like to do this too! I danced for a while as a kid and a few years back I took an adult class and it was super challenging and fun! You use parts of your body that you just don't use! It's an awesome workout - I highly recommend!
There were classes near me, not sure about online or other resources but I bet you could find adult classes near you.

@hellobeeboston: so far I've only found one that isn't a ridiculous drive away but they only offer classes 530 to 630 am & hubby has already left for work by then & I have no one to watch DD

It depends where you live! Where I live, most beginner classes are not so beginner, so it can be intimidating, which I think is a shame! But I bet you could find one - look at places that have ballet classes for children, some have adult classes as well! If you can, I'd aim for in person rather than a DVD, only because ballet is really all about form, and you could hurt yourself if no one is there to tell you if you are doing it right. Not to mention the class will be more varied than doing the same thing every time!

@Mrs. Sunshine: aww boo! I had to stop because the times didn't work I my schedule.... Maybe call and see if they ever offer the class at different times or on weekends??

I used to be a dancer but haven't done it since college. If you like ballet but can't find any in-person classes I'd recommend a Bar Method class or even Pilates. I feel like both of those have some great elements of dance/movement and really help if you are trying to get into shape, and may be more available/accessible than a ballet class. Like @Pirouette said, most of the adult ballet classes here are basic but not super beginner. Have fun!
ETA you could look into private lessons if you want to build a foundation before joining other ballet classes!

This is my super old ballet DVD but it is awesome and still available: NYC Ballet Workout. I have video 1 and 2 but 1 is way better. Easy enough and I feel so 'professional'. It's more of a workout video but with ballet moves and real ballet dancers.

I'm in NYC which might be a pretty unique situation, but almost every dance studio has adult classes, and periodic "absolute beginner" workshops that are great for remembering basics.
That said, many gyms including the YMCA even have at least one ballet class a week, with mixed ability levels. Even if you're not ready for floor exercises, the barre portion can be great. I'd call around and check.

Ooh, I would love to do this! I always wanted to dance as a kid, but I never did. After baby is born, I think I am going to try a Barre class. They look awesome!
