Try baking soda and vinegar!! Seriously! I read about it online last night, and our shower drain was draining sooooo slow....and I was going to go out and buy Drano today, but instead last night we tried this first! All we did was put about 1/2 cup of baking soda just right down the drain, and then we poured the vinegar down. Then you put the plug in the drain really fast and let it sit for 30 minutes. Then we boiled a tea kettle full of hot water and after the 30 minutes poured that down the drain, and bam! That did the trick! So don't waste your$6-$7 on Drano everytime (or $12-$14 because we always have to do it twice) try this first!

oh also, I put a few drops of peppermint oil in there. Made it smell good

Also, according to DH (he's a plumber), Drano and Liquid Plumber are really, really bad for your pipes. It's a quick fix, but over time can lead to bigger issues.

Yeah, something like that! Not necessarily a big deal if you rent and need a quick fix, but if you own, you may care a little more about those pipes!

Yes we have tried. It didn't get out a big clog we had (drano didn't either though). We also did several pots of boiling water.

@Mrsbells: No problem! It's such an easy fix, especially with stuff that you normally already have around the house. Plus then youy don't have to worry about the chemicals that you are dumping down your drain either!

Great suggestion! We have major drainage issues and always go the Draino route, which is expensive and I know not great for our pipes over time.

@MrsBrewer: Do you think it works with hair? Is there anything that gets rid of hair? I am guessing there is hair in my drain and I really don't feel like pulling it out! BARF!

I did this too in a pinch when I didn't have time to run to the store! NOTE: If it still doesn't drain, try a plunger--that should get the thing going.
WARNING: Do NOT use Drain-o if this method doesn't work. I read somewhere that there can be a very bad interaction between the draino and the vinegar/baking soda.

@anonysquire: Well I think that's what's down our drain too. I have pretty long hair, and we keep a hair catcher thing over our drain, but I'm sure my hair still gets down there, and that's what's causing the clogs. So I think it will work with hair too! We did it last night, and it drains soooo much better now this morning. No more water up to my ankles while taking a shower!

@anonysquire: I know, I don't like it either, but I shed soooo much that I couldn't even imagine the amount of hair going down if I didn't! I just clean it off after every shower with a little piece of tissue or toilet paper, and toss it in the trash then

after SOMEONE in my household flushed paper towels down our toilet we were able to fix it with dish soap and boiling water. my husband was shocked that it actually worked. thank you google!
