I really liked Girlfriends Guide to Pregnancy for a more lighthearted approach and Your Pregnancy Week-by-Week for a more informational one.
I was not a fan of What to Expect. I found it a little condescending.

I really like the Mayo Clinic's Guide to a Healthy Pregnancy - it's been a great resource for me over the course of my pregnancy...DH loves Dude Youre Gonna Be a Dad. He never picks up a book for fun but he had this read cover to cover in a few days.
I borrowed What to Expect from a friend but put it down after a few chapters. I found it scared me with all its worst-case-scenarios more than anything.

Ina May Gaskin's Guide to Childbirth was great for reading birth stories.
I know lots of people didn't like What to Expect, but I really don't understand why it scared people. I liked it. Super easy to read since it was broken down by month.

I LOVED Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn. So much better than What to Expect. And The Girlfriend's Guide was funny, and definitely covered a few things that conventional books don't cover.

@littlebug: By Penny Simpkin? I love that one too- I'm reading it right now for my doula training.
Here's another vote for Ina May's Guide To Childbirth right here.

I loved Ina Mays book! Another boo for WTEWE... I despise it's perspective on pregnancy & birth. (The first year & toddler years is even worse).
