Alright bees,
Give me your best excuses for explaining to friends why you're not drinking before anyone can know you're pregnant. If I don't see the same people too close together, the antibiotics excuse has kind of worked (some are still suspicious).
What do you have for me?

Antibiotics, driving, given it up for lent, detoxing... I tried to avoid these situations in the early days and after seeing my friend twice and not wanting to make up two different lies I told her the truth.

Diet was the only one that may have worked for me - paleo or Whole30 is a good one. I actually started one right before I found out I was PG so it was believable to some, I think. My best friends I just went ahead and told because they would be suspicious regardless - I always have at least one drink when out.
I think the antibiotics excuse is tough with women, because many are familiar with it as PG coverup. Saying you have a hangover from yesterday might work too.

i said i had a stomach bug the week before so i was still feeling a little hesitant about drinking. it didn't totally make sense because we were eating spicy food, but whatever.

I was pretty much able to avoid most situations (got pg right before the holidays and was away, plus I felt too sick to go out). Te one excuse I used was bad headaches or migraines, which was believable bc I do get headaches a lot and the got worse in the first trimester.

Love this post! I am dreading Easter weekend bc I always have a drink and it will be suspicious when I don't.
I'm thinking about using the DD excuse on Saturday and on Sunday saying I drank too much the night before.
Headaches and antibiotics will not work for me unfortunately.

I said i was really dehydrated once....I went to a spin class that morning and had a headache from not having enough water

I blamed not feeling well. I also went to a friend's party where I pretended to drink! I made a cranberry and vodka without vodka 
Funny thing is that one of my friends took a drink of mine by accident, realized it was just cranberry juice, and figured out I was pregnant, haha. She never said anything until after I told everyone though!

@pepper, I totally did that to a girlfriend of mine! She had a "cranberry and vodka" and it was in a different cup than the rest of ours. And it was really dark. Definitely just cranberry juice

I usually pretend to drink. I'll either get a beer and go to the bathroom with it and pour part of it out or make a "mixed drink" with a lime in it.

dieting, hung over, or faking it (holding a glass of wine or a beer, putting ginger ale in a champagne glass, etc). depended on the audience!

I was terrible at this. I offered to be DD on Christmas Eve (about 2 wks after we found out we were expecting) and my mom saw right through it! A couple of times I used needing to work early the next day as an excuse. Again, friends saw right through that! Apparently I'm a lush!
When we did tell our families eventually over Christmas holidays, we side-stepped curious cousins by filling an empty beer bottle with ginger ale.

Working Out/Healthy kick, hungover, antibiotics, sick, and pretty much avoided people for the first 10 weeks! And I did pour beer out and fill it with water on more than one occasion!

Doing a detox (might have to actually edit your eating to make that believable though)
Losing weight for bikini season
Have a real or fake drink in hand (at bars I would ask the bartender for coke and water - to dilute the color - in the normal drink glass vs the glass they give you if it's just soda)

Well my sister got married when I was 6 weeks along so I told all her bridesmaids to get them on team "lets keep this under wraps". My family all knew. My mom had too much to drink and before I knew it people were rubbing my tummy :T lol!!!
I just drank soda and didn't mention it to anyone.

@skipper2010: I used the hangover one successfully quite a few times! haha....
The other thing I did was pull the waitress aside and tell her that whatever I ordered, if she brought it in a nonalcoholic version without saying anything, there was an extra $20 in it for her. I've had people bring my nonalcoholic beer (in a pint glass) and fakey mixed drinks.
@Ocean girl: Oh I forgot I did this! I had a few beer bottles in the back of the fridge that I'd filled with water and screwed the caps back on.... haha...

It was easy for me, I don't usually drink anyway. Alcohol gives me migraines, so I really can't. And then I could always say I was getting a migraine/having a bad head day so I couldn't. Nobody would suspect a thing.
Could you say you've been getting a lot of headaches recently and have noticed that alcohol is triggering them?

No excuse worked for me since I'm obviously not a dieter at all and I ALWAYS am drinking 100% of the time when I go out (seriously, I'll drink if no one else does - I love it so much) so I just pretended to drink. I had many elaborate schemes that included:
1) calling the restaurant ahead of time and describing what I was wearing and instructing them to make my drink a virgin even though I ordered it as alcoholic (which totally worked).
2) holding a beer/wine in my hand and pretending to take sips and every so often DH would take a 'taste' while he actually gulped it down making it look like I was drinking it (this got him super drunk on several occasions)
3) When at home, we made 'fake cocktails' which was very hard to do since normally people watch you like a hawk when you're making a drink to see how much/what you're putting in it. I actually prefered holding the real thing and pretending to take sips to making a fake cocktail since it was much easier to be called out that way

I forgot about the just holding a glass of wine or whatever. Works best in a bigger group but I have a friend who did it at a wedding and I had no idea. I did it at thanksgiving and no one noticed.
