I'm not that far along, but I want to start thinking about things. We have a 2/2, DS's room and our very large master. We will easily be able to turn a corner of the master into an area for the baby. Wondering what might be the best set up to look into? We put DS in a crib from night 1 home from the hospital, but not sure if I want to do that or something different. Ideas or suggestions welcome! The only one we currently own is a travel crib, any other option we'd have to purchase.

We used a pack n play that had the bassinet on top, it worked for us.

@littlek: I think the only thing that I hate about the BB travel crib is it's really deep and difficult to bend over and reach into which makes me nervous especially in the postpartum period...I wish it came with a bassinet option like a PNP does! DS loves it now but hated it as an infant!

The first 2 weeks DS and I co-slept.
Then he went into a pnp in our room.
I forget when, but at around 2 months we moved his pnp into our spacious walk in closet.
He started STTN around then! -
@chopsuey119: did you use a co-sleeper or just have him in bed with you? I would really love to co-sleep but DH is a big guy and we have a queen!

@matador84: he slept on my left side in bed with me. DH sleeps on my right.
We have a King.. I can see how a queen might not be enough room! -
I would advise against a rock and play.
While the height, size and convenience worked really well for us, our baby ended up with severe plagiocephaly.The first thing the specialist asked was "does he sleep in a rock and play".
I know there are other factors, but the specialist believes rock and plays can increase the risk/severity of flat-head.PS, the helmet he now has to wear was $3700.

We just did a pack n play pulled up to the bed. If could do it all again and I felt like shelling out the money, I would get an arms reach co-sleeper.

@wheres_c: DS has plagiocephaly and I'd rather not go through that again! it would be like a last resort. he didn't have to wear a helmet, but we had PT every 3 weeks for months! @PrincessBaby: omg so do i!! i have like practically fallen over it before with baby in hand, especially now that he's heavier!

This is what I'm stuck on right now too! #1 will be 17 months when #2 comes along. We're really hoping to not have to buy another crib!
My tentative plan is to purchase a bassinet or portacrib (is that the same thing as a PNP?) for #2 and have that in our room somewhere, and hope that #1 decides he's ready for a floor bed early ish O_o

@matador84: yeah, leaning into the BB sucks!
I would go with a crib or a PNP. I don't let my LO sleep in the RNP for extended periods.

I would just spurge and get a second crib. Even if you use a co-sleeper/bassinet/RNP for a few weeks, you will still have to address the issue eventually.
ETA - And splurge, I mean, like you can find a cheap Graco crib and mattress set at Walmart for like $150.

@Penny Lane: You may be able to make it! We just transitioned our 20 month old to a twin bed and it went wonderfully!

You can get a crib from IKEA for $100. I'd do that and just play the rest of it by ear.

@matador84: How old is DS, and is he in a regular crib? Any chance he will be ready to move to a big boy bed or floor bed soon? It doesn't sound like the travel crib you have now would be good with the bending issue.
@wheres_c: Did the specialist say anything about how long is too long in the RnP? I was planning to have this baby sleep in one for the first couple of months, next to my bed. Now I'm freaked out! We have other options though-- the bassinet of our UB Vista, potentially borrowing a friend's mini crib... I'm wondering if I should do that instead. My nephew needed the helmet for his flat head, but he also has low muscle tone over all so I wouldn't think it's necessarily because of the RnP. My other nephew slept in one for the first couple of months and had a slightly flat head, but it seems like every baby does to some extent, with sleeping on their backs. (Sorry for the thread jack..)

@Foodnerd81: when lo 2 is born he'll be 15-16 months. His crib converts to a toddler bed so we're planning on keeping him in that for now at least.
