I wore a gown the whole time but went home in the same maternity dress that I wore to the hospital

Sounds like a good plan! I had a c-section so I was in a gown until the next morning after my surgery. My hospital has post c-section "goals" and one of mine was to take a shower and get dressed in normal clothes (if I desired).

The only thing I didn't really anticipate was how many people would visit at the hospital. My nightgowns were kind of big on me (passed down between my mom friends) and the boob area was kind of stretched from just pulling it down. My boss came to visit and I felt pretty self conscious. I had a robe, but never thought to put it on because I was feeding him all.the.time. Long story short - my only real advice is to make sure you have nightgowns / comfy clothes that you are comfortable with people seeing you wearing!

As soon as I got to the hospital, they had me change into one of their gowns, though i could definitely see using your own robe over it!

After birth, I changed into yoga pants, nursing tank, and a wrap sweater.

I was in the hospital gown before delivery and for about a day afterward. And then I wore a nightgown with a robe over it the rest of the time until I left. I would have loved to wear pants but even after delivery they checked my stitches a lot so it was just easier not to deal with that. I'll probably do the same thing next time.

I think your afterwards outfit sounds perfect. For labour if you don't have to wear a hospital gown then I think whatever is comfortable. I had bought a big comfy nightshirt specifically for labour - but I spent most of the time labouring in the clothes I had walked into the hospital in, as I just didn't have the wherewithal to get changed! But if you're self conscious without the robe then I would go for something else underneath, you may get incredibly hot and not want a robe anywhere near you'

I wore the hospital gown with both before delivery. It was just easiest and honestly I didn't want anything to get on my nicer stuff. Afterwards I wore some comfy yoga pants and a nursing tank top with a wrap on top. It was perfect.

For all the ladies mentioning nursing tanks, where did you get them?

@MamaG: I picked mine up at the mall's maternity store. (Motherhood, Peas in pods? Whatever the "cheaper" one is.) I got them on sale, and they were perfect for me, and I'm kind of busty. I didn't wear a bra for weeks!

@snowjewelz: I really liked having a motherhood maternity night gown. It was past my knees, pretty covered on top, and easy access for nursing. I just put a robe over it for visitors.

Oh, and bring some warm/fuzzy socks! Sadly mine were destroyed when my water broke all over them, but they were nice while they lasted and I wished I had a second pair.

The hospital had me put on one of their gowns first thing. I wore those non-slip socks the hospital gives out too. After my post-delivery shower I put on maternity yoga pants, a nursing bra, nursing tank, and a loose fitting maternity t-shirt over it, plus sneakers/slippers.

I wore the hospital gown for a while (like, days) because I was bleeding all the time and sweating all the time and just plain gross. It was nice to just toss it in the hospital laundry and get a new one. Eventually I switched over to scrub pants and one of my DH's t shirts with a nursing bra underneath. I had to stay for a few days and really didn't feel like wearing anything even remotely normal. I only had family for visitors and I wore my own robe over the t-shirt and scrubs.

Odd that most people complain about the hospital being cold. I had a January baby and the Postpartum unit was so darn hot it was miserable and I'm someone who's always cold.

My hospital supplied fuzzy socks.

I wore a stretchy sports bra and a hospital gown before and during labor because I did not want to get any of my stuff nasty. After, I wore a nursing bra and a custom hospital gown that I was gifted. If I had not been gifted the custom one, I probably would have worn yoga pants and a tank top.

Afterwards I wore a big tshirt and my usually too-big pj pants.

Just something to think about, you will bleed a lot. So don't spend a ton. I stuck with the hospital robe and later nursing tanks and lounge pants.
