I had my 6-week postpartum doctor's visit today and am officially cleared to have sex again. (Yay!) The doctor asked what kind of birth control I wanted, and I was at a loss. For now she wrote me a prescription for the mini-pill, but she also gave me info on IUDs -- both with hormones and without. I'm tempted to get an IUD, but I'm not sure which one to get. I'm also nervous that if I want to have another baby, it might take a while to conceive after the IUD is removed. I'm weighing the pros and cons right now, so I'd love to hear what others chose as their post-baby birth control method.

I chose to get the Mirena IUD. My long time female primary care doc is a mother of 2 and was a big proponent of it...and used it herself. My new primary care doc (I moved so new doc) is also a mom and also uses it. My OB's wife also uses it.
I was going to do the mini-pill bc I had been using the pill for years with no issues but I thought life with a baby is more unpredictable so there is a greater chance I would miss a day and I did not want to risk getting pregnant too soon. So ultimately I decided to go with the IUD and so far I am happy...it has not affected my supply (I am still EBF)...there was bad cramping for 1 day and then spotting for several weeks...and then really really light spotting for a few months.

How soon are you wanting baby #2? I think that would be a big consideration in deciding what form of birth control you should use. I've known of a number of women who have gotten pregnant while on the mini pill, so you might want to also take that into consideration.

I will probably end up getting the mirena iud again after lo is born. I had it for 3 years after having our first lo and I got pregnant my first cycle off of it and didn't have any issues with it.

I got mirena 4 weeks ago. I have had some bleeding but overall I really like it!

I'm on the pill. I had planned on getting the Mirena IUD. I even scheduled the appt to have it put in at my 6 week postpartum check up. I never felt 100% comfortable with it though and decided against it. We also use condoms when I'm ovulating.

I chose the mini pill since we aren't planning on waiting very long before trying for baby #2, and I am very happy with it. I was hesitant to go back on hormones again since my old pill made me feel crappy, but I really like this pill.

We;re planning to wait several years before we talk about having another baby and I wanted something easy and low-maintenance so I chose the Mirena. I'm getting it put in at my 6 week appointment on Friday.

@Mrs. Jacks: is it hard to do nfp with little ones around? I'd think it would be so difficult to get up and temp at the same time every morning.

I didn't vote in the poll. I did Mirena IUD for 6 months. I loved it for the convenience of not having to take anything. I hated it for the amount of time I spent bleeding. I'm now back on the pill.

I had the Mirena for four years and didn't have a period during that time. When it came time to TTC I got pregnant in our second cycle trying.

@mediagirl: I get up to pull little one into bed at the same time each morning as it gets her to sleep another couple hours, so I've got a pretty regular schedule. It works for us, but I can see how it would be hard for some.

@Mrs. Jacks: when you were nursing LJ, were you able to NFP? I was worried that I wouldn't know when my cycle starts because I haven't had a period yet....... and I REALLY don't want to have a surprise baby! lol!

I will go back on Mirena after LO is born. We had NO issues getting pregnant immediately after removing the Mirena IUD (which I had in for several years). I don’t think there is any evidence it takes a while to conceive after removing an IUD (?). I don’t know anyone who had an IUD who had issues conceiving after removal of the IUD (or, where any timing issues were actually caused by the IUD). My OB uses Mirena herself, which is comforting.

I haven't decided yet, but the 6 months I was off of BC and usign condoms were the months I felt best and actually had a sex drive again. I think we will probably stick with condoms since we want baby number two within a couple years.

I thought, but I could be wrong, that you actually go back to being fertile immediately after an IUD is removed, where on the pill it can take a couple of months (at least the combo, I don't know anything about the mini except that it's more important to take it at the same time every day). But of course, I think the expense of an IUD insertion and removal is probably more than a few months of pills.
I don't have kids yet but I would like to use NFP/condoms in between first and second, if it works for us. -
I'm planning to try Mirena after LO is born - I was never a fan of the pill and don't want to go back to Depo.

I decided to let nature take its course. I was ebf, but got my period back at 7 months pp. got pregnant with baby #2 a few days after my Lo turned 1!

We're sticking with condoms until I'm done breastfeeding. Once I start my period again, we'll most likely do a combo of NFP and condoms. The mini pill scares me because I've heard so many stories of people getting pregnant while using it. It won't be too long before we start trying for #2, so an IUD isn't really a worth it for me right now.

@Foodnerd81: My IUD was covered by insurance. It cost only my regular co-pay cost ($20) to have it inserted, and the removal was actually free (no idea why!).

I'm on Seasonale, it's the pill that gives you a period every three months. I'm on it for health reasons along with preventing pregnancy though. My period triggers migraines, so the less periods I get, the less migraines.
