I just changed ds' diaper and there was mucous/blood in it. We started him on probiotics over the weekend.
Should we stop them? Call pedi? I'm sure the answer to both questions in yes... I'm just super nervous!

That sounds like it could be a allergy or food sensitivity. My LO's poo is mucousy and tested positive for blood even though we couldn't see it and she has milk/soy intolerance.

I don't remember how old your LO is, but definitely call the pedi. This happened to us at 3 months and the doc wanted to see M that day. She was eventually diagnosed with MSPI (which explained the 3 months of crying as well). Either way I'd call the pedi today.

I'm sorry - that's scary!
I'd call the ped to get LO checked out. Might be nothing major, but its definitely better to get checked!

@abbydabbydoodlebug: we're on nutramigen because I thought he had an intolerance before but since there was no obvious blood, they didn't test.
@MrsF: he's 4 months old.

another one for calling the peditirican, MSPI is a very big possibility.

@Ash: We switched to Allimentum from Nutramgen, LO was able to handle it better. Maybe give that a try?

@Ash: My LO is MSPI, too and I tried Alimentum ona dvice from our ped (similar to Nutramigen) and it gave her the WORST bloody diapers I'd ever seen. So then our Dr. suggested Neocate or for me to keep up with the MSPI diet, which I've been doing since Neocate is so expensive.
So if an intolerance is severe enough, even Nutramigen can irritate.
Are the probiotics made with any kind of dairy or soy product?

@Anagram: no. They're these:

I'm still pumping because I was hoping his belly issues that caused me to try nutramigen would go away with time (I've cut dairy and soy).

@Ash: I didn't know you were already on nutramigen. Maybe they will recommend neocate or something even more hypoallergenic (I forget what the real word is for those). Is there hidden dairy or soy in the probiotics?
pomegranate / 3601 posts
@Ash: we had this happen twice. The first time is was a stomach bug the second time it was pain killers I had to take. Both times the pedi wanted to examine his stomach and had us come in. Also stool samples were taken.

The nurse called me back to get more info so I'm waiting for her to talk to the doctor. So far, he's had 3 mucousy poops with blood... 2 of which were after talking to her.

@Ash: Elecare is another option, that's what we're on... mucho $$$ though, but it's partly covered by insurance for us.

@Ash: oh man. As you know, we had our issues. LO had blood in his poop on top of other symptoms. Nutramigen was horrible for him. Alimentum wasn't as bad but still not good. Neocate has been amazing!

@beaker: @ladybee: this makes me so sad. He's been on the nutramigen for 2 months now and we've seen such great improvement. I don't understand why this is happening now.

@Ash: I felt the same about soy formula! We switched at 4 weeks and until 3.5 months everything was really good. Then out of nowhere it escalated and he was diagnosed MSPI. Our GI said it's sometimes a delayed reaction. I don't know. The cost of Neocate was hard to swallow but now he's only drinking 24-32oz and eating a lot of solids so it's more manageable.

@matador84: @LovelyPlum: @MrsH: Thank you
@ladybee: & I thought nutramigen was pricey!
Does anyone think the ingredients in the probiotics might be causing it or does it sound like mspi?
persimmon / 1331 posts
@Ash: completely a guess, but maybe he has a sensitivity to one of the fruits/vegetables they use in the probiotic? I know strawberries is one that can be iffy... There are so many fruits and veggies listed, he could easily not do well with one or multiple. Maybe try a different probiotic? I doubt the actual lactobacillus is what he is reacting to. If you've been ok on nutramigen for awhile I don't know why it would start now!

@Emsmems: I was iffy about using these anyways but a few girls on here said they were pedi recommended so I went with it.
I'm afraid to try anything else but we stopped giving them to him.

@ladybee: @Cara M. 17: we stopped those probiotics and went to the pedi - he tested positive for c.diff which as a nurse, I know can be a false positive. Since d/cing the probiotics, his poops are getting better! I haven't noticed blood and the mucous is improving. The pedi thinks the fruits and veggies in it irritated his colon which was why my gut told me to avoid that one in particular but I didn't listen. But it looks like he's on the mend! We're supposed to follow up on Monday and reintroduce bm to get more good stuff in his tummy!

@Ash: oh good! Glad to hear things are going in the right direction!!
