So so sad! I definitely try not to think it'll never happen to me, so I don't get too complacent.

I feel terrible for him and his family. It's every parent's worst nightmare. My heart aches for them.

@GoGoSnoGirl: You're right! I have to believe that pool had no fence, or something of that nature. They were having water day today at daycare with the little wading pools. Even though I know they are supervised and they are a little older, I couldn't stop worrying.

@macintosh: yes, I'm sure I'd worry a bit, too, though I'm sure it'll be fine. My in laws have a pool but are replacing the deck, fence & ladder, so I've been so nervous for my LO & her cousins.

Ugh, yes it's so sad. After having a child I can hardly bear to read stories like that.

Ugh, so sad, I can't even imagine. Stuff like this scares me! It can happen so quick

So so sad. This reminds me last summer there was a family close by my work where twins drowned in the pool
I was with DD1 at a pool party over the weekend and I was watching everyone like a hawk

It breaks my heart to read stories like this. Having children is the scariest thing in the world.
An 18 month old girl died at our old daycare 2 years ago; she climbed up an above-ground pool ladder and fell into the pool. Something my 15 month old DD would totally do. It can happen so fast.

This is so sad. It hits way too close to home. I have already reached out to a swim instructor to have my 21 month old pool-loving girl start proper swim lessons asap.

ugh. This is horrible.
Random comment: We have been considering a move to Orange County and I've been shocked by the number of pools on real estate listings without fences AND by how close to the house they pools are - literally 3-4 feet from the back door in some cases!! It terrifies me! I would love a pool but with 2 little ones it scares me so much.

@psw27: Some people just do not get it. We have a pool at our house and you wouldn’t believe the number of people who’ve asked/assumed we would take the fence down when we moved in. I’m like hello, it’s to prevent my children from drowning, it’s not a landscape statement.

@Jennibenni: to prevent both your children and any other children who happen by! My next door neighbors have a pool and I very much appreciate their nice tall secure fence.

@psw27: FWIW, they might have a secure back yard door.... ours is required by code to either have that or a fence. Our door can't be opened unless you can reach 5 feet high, and pull with the strength of an adult, and it automatically slides shut so it can't be "left" open.
If you buy a house with a pool, it's only about 2000 to install a fence or pool net. My friends have a pool net and they are amazingly sturdy and secure.

@DesertDreams88: oh I've never heard of that! My parents have the fence you can put it and out (like a net). It's very secure so I would definitely be adding one of those immediately.
