Just like the title says...
I am sitting in the waiting room for my 6 week pp appointment and realize I have no idea what I am going to do for birth control.
What did you do?

Ahh you're not 6 weeks PP yet are you?!. I think it depends how close you want your kiddos. We just used condoms between #1 & #2 since we knew we wanted them about 2 years apart. It wasn't really worth it to get an IUD.
This time I'm thinking I'll get a Mirena IUD since if we have a third there will be a bigger gap (for daycare costs )

Last time nothing I now have 2 under 2 after trying for the first for almost 2 years...if we were having 2 I wanted them back to back so this works for me. This time mirena, we are done.

We did nothing. I got my period back at about 9 months pp and was pregnant by 12. We wanted them close though.

The pill isn't an option while BFing right?? It seems like everyone went with the IUD. I'm due in 6 weeks with LO 2 and def want birth control but don't love the idea of an IUD. I didn't get my period back until after I totally weaned LO 1, and we used no birth control, so not sure if that just worked, but we were ok with getting pregnant so we didn't care. Different story this time!

We used a combo of abstinence, pull and pray, and NFP. It worked because we actively tried for ds2 and they're 2.5 yrs apart like we wanted. Af also came back at 4.5 pp so it was easier to track my fertile time compared to other BF mamas. We will probably look into more permanent measures soon!

Condoms. I didn't want to go back on hormonal birth control and I've read too many IUD horror stories here to feel comfortable getting one.

Condoms! I'm not a fan of IUDs or the pill... So even if I wasn't breastfeeding it'd probably be the same.

@QBbride: I will be 5 weeks tomorrow-- time flies when you don't sleep!

@hellobeeboston: I think most doctors recommend the mini pill because estrogen can decrease supply.

Condoms and pull n' pray. I don't do well on hormonal birth control and I know two many people who have had issues with IUD's.

Condoms and pull and pray. I didn't want to go on the pill, and I was nervous about an iud when I knew we wanted another in not too long- but we also didn't want them too close. I didn't get my period back until she was almost weaned, around 18 or 19 months, and I got pregnant that next month. You have to be very careful with pull and pray if you aren't ready for another one!
After this one, almost definitely our last, I plan to get an iud since I care much more about the effectiveness. And I'm less scared of the potential side effects since I think my baby making days will be done anyway.

Nothing the first time and I got pregnant at 4 months PP. We've used PNP this time around and I'm now 12 months + PP with no pregnancies.

Nothing. It took forever to conceive LO1, so we're NTNP for LO2 and are okay if they are close! Sort of okay? Scared but okay?

Just condoms, but I'll strongly consider an IUD after the next baby.
The nurse-midwives at my hospital are big IUD promoters and I trust their judgment.

I planned to take the mini pill for 6 months and then start trying again. I ended up quitting the pill after 6 weeks because I wouldn't stop bleeding.
After that we just kind of gave up. I want two close together so it wouldn't be that awful.

Nothing. I'd love to get pregnant again soon, but so far no period yet at almost 6 months

I went on the mini-pill at 8 weeks postpartum, and hated it. They were like crazy pills for me, and quite frankly, at 8 weeks postpartum, I didn't need any more crazy.
So I took 3 (maybe 4?) packs and quit. Now, we're kind of being careful and kind of now. We want more kids, so an oops wouldn't be bad--but I also haven't gotten my period back and am still nursing/pumping.

@JCCovi: I don't think you really can use NFP if you haven't gotten your period- or at least, you'd have really long periods of abstinence. I know my body had signs that it was trying to ovulate for months on and off before I actually got my period.

Prayer? And pulling out. My husband is getting a vasectomy in December after racing season ends, but that's a long way away.

@JCCovi: I think @Foodnerd81: is right: not really, in our experience. We were planning on it, but I was way too confused with my CM postpartum. I freaked that I would get pregnant quickly and ended up getting a Paragard IUD. I'm glad, too, because my period just came back last week at 15.5 months PP, eight weeks after we weaned. That would have been a nightmare to chart, because I had clear CM for weeks and weeks before I actually ovulated.

the first time around nothing as we wanted them close together. This time, I went to have an IUD put in. They tried multiple times on 2 different days and couldn't get it in. They set me up with a specialist, but I canceled the appointment. Now we aren't using anything as we are going to go for #3. We need them to be close in age for work / daycare purposes.

Between 1 and 2 we used condoms for a bit then nothing because we wanted our boys close together. I didn't have a cycle until 8pp and then got pregnant the next cycle.
Between 2 and future kiddos we aren't preventing at all. E is still nursing like crazy at 18 months old so who knows. No cycle in sight.

Condoms all through BFing. I got my period back 12 months PP and didn't want to take any chances because you still can ovulate before you get that first period!
