Lame! Is there a Buy Buy Baby around you? I have always found them to be a lot nicer and more accommodating than BRU.

I figure ours would give the same response but they actually did let us. We had to leave a drivers license at the counter.

@coacheswife123: That's really ridiculous. You should call HQ and complain. They let me try one out in Asheville, no problem! An employee brought it out to the car for us.

@coacheswife123: boo! I'd complain to a regional manager. I'm sure they'd want your patronage!

I would complain to the Manager or even corporate. But I have a feeling they would do the same at our store, they are not the best at customer service.

@coacheswife123: just curious. What is the BRU return policy on sears? Would they rather you buy the seat and open the box just to try it out? I think it's still considered unused and new so they would have to take the return even with a receipt. I think breast pumps are the only thing you can't open the box but they have a seal on them.

That stinks! I remember them telling us we could take strollers out to see if they fit but I do don't remember what they said about car seats. What if you ask a manager/leave your liscense or see if someone watches you so you "cant steal it"?
Also, @T.H.O.U. and @coacheswife123: We bought a convertible through them online, put it in our car, tags still on, and didn't like it so we returned it no problem. Maybe you could do that? But it is still extra steps.

@wheres_c: safety 1st complete air !
@T.H.O.U.: they did say we could purchase and return ! Problem is I found it cheaper on Albee baby so I really just wanted to test the fit !

@coacheswife123: Realistically, that's probably the reason they don't allow it - they exist to make a profit, and when people come into the store and want to test things and ask questions and such so that they can turn around and buy it somewhere else online, there's nothing in it for the store. And it does cause many to crack down on not allowing things like taking a car seat off display and outside so that you can test it in your vehicle. Just speaking from the perspective of someone who worked retail for many years.
But as far as an actual solution to your problem goes, why don't you just ask BRU to price match Albee baby? Then you can test it out and return it if it doesn't fit. They match online prices on baby gear, including car seats: http://www.toysrus.com/shop/index.jsp?categoryId=11949070
