If you built your home or are in the process, was/is it stressful? Would you do it all over again?

Omigosh I would LOVE to build my own dream house one day! I'm sure it's stressful, but I love designing/choosing stuff and I would have a blast getting to pick everything for it haha!

@pui: This. I told DH I'm not moving until we could build our own house. That will probably be in about 60 years at this rate, though!

@Mrs. Cat in the Cradle: yeeeah... I'll have to settle for Minecraft house building for now haha!

We planned to build our own home, had everything ready to go except purchasing the land lot and then ended up buying a new build. it is stressful, and you need to do your research on everything and find a builder you trust. There are good builders out there, but a lot of quick-fix types too. You need to know what you want and be firm about it. I would build a home for sure, but it is work!

@yoursilverlining: Thats just it, finding a builder to trust is my main concern. We have a few in mind and have yet to go through model homes but its definitely what we plan to do in the near future. I just always hear pros and cons so it makes me wonder, but i guess that goes with anything.

@pui: I feel the same way! It sounds so fun, but yet.... complicated? I would just be worried to pick something out without seeing it done first if that makes sense? lol

@Mrs.Hawk71: Yeeeah... I mean I've picked out paint before that I thought would look awesome and then ended up repainting the bathroom a day later lol.

I'm in the process! Yes, you definitely do need to find a builder you trust. We were lucky in that regard (though you still need to stay on top of them -- we just found ours putting a window where it didn't belong. They would have figured it out sooner or later, but still).
Yes, picking out everything is fun, but it's time-consuming. I've been meeting with them like once a week for the past month with no end in sight, LOL. Also, you need to be prepared for the fact that the things you want won't always be within your allowances, which means you'll want to upgrade, which means even more $$$$. We're trying not to go crazy, but it's hard to not want the nicer stuff when you're building a shiny new home!

@Mrs. Yoyo: Congrats! I totally see where your coming from, i would feel the same way about the upgrades..."its just a little more" adds up to be a lot more in the end! But how fun and exciting for you guys!

@Mrs.Hawk71: You also need to make sure they give you a reasonable allowance to begin with. A lot of builders give you the extreme bare minimum to keep the overall house price lower.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Very true, but how did you know what was reasonable since there is so much stuff to pick out? Also, i know theres a few steps to the loan process for the building like construction/closing etc. Did this seem more complicated compared to just buying a house. (if you were a homeowner before building)

It's our dream!!! One of the main reasons I want to work- so we can save for a house

Well DH is an architect, so this is probably in our future. I'm sure it will be super stressful, but it's what we've always wanted, and DH knows the whole business, which helps.

@Mrs.Hawk71: I kinda priced things out using retail sites and got to look at the quality of finishes in another home in the neighborhood. Our builder does mostly custom work and that typically means a little bit more leeway and more generous allowances (but again, still not hard at all to go over them and they can be sneaky, like not including the fridge when they figure the appliance allowance).
The loan process is a little more annoying since you typically need a construction-to-perm loan rather than standard, but DH worked all that out, thankfully.
