If you went to a brunch (10am-12pm)baby shower, would you expect to have cake? I'm just not sure. We are going to have fancy donuts among other things.

You don’t have your get a huge cake, but I think folks expect a “centerpiece” dessert. If you make a “cake” out of other foods (donuts, crumb cake, cupcakes, etc) you could skip it, but I’d much rather have a slice of cake than a fancy donut. I’m also a person who made a huge carrot cake for my breakfast birthday party last year

Nah. I'd rather splurge on a donut or other breakfast carbs. I went to one a few weeks ago and they had bakery donuts arranged on a tired serving tray, a cinnamon roll casserole, fruit, a savory egg/potato dish, coffee and juice/mimosas. No cake.
However, the age of the attendees might say something different. I feel like my grandma's era might expect cake and red punch

I don’t know that I’d expect it, but I agree with @BUNBUN: that a centerpiece dessert of some kind might be good, vs something that is just there to eat along with the other foods. Also I love cake

No, I'm not a big fan of cake. Costco recently had these baklava trays that were amazing! I don't know if they were just a Christmas thing but I would choose those over cake any day.

I agree with the idea of a centerpiece dessert in addition to any other sweets. But whether that is a cake or something else I would base on the preferences of the guest of honor!

I love donuts too. I would have both!

If I were throwing it I would definitely serve cake, but as a guest I’d be fine with doughnuts.

I don't expect anything, but also wouldn't think it's weird if there's cake!
