If you had to choose one of the other, would you choose to do a studio cake smash photo shoot (or in general 1st birthday shoot) or would you go with a photographer to capture the 1st birthday party? We're not planning a big fancy party either. It'll be in our home with less than 20 people attending.

We did a cake smash in the mall (they did a great job). I was happy we did it there because at her actual party she was a bit overwhelmed with all the people and didn't want to mess with the cake.
I just had my camera out and my SIL took a bunch of pictures at the actual party and got lots of good ones. .

I think it would depend on how big of a party I was having, and if there was anything interesting (cool decorations, pretty venue etc), to photograph. I am a photo freak so I would probably want to do both the cake smash and party photographer

I would much rather do a family photo shoot around the first birthday than have a photographer at the party.

We are having less than 30 people at my house for her first bday and I plan to display pics of her cake smash then.

@MamaMoose: I thought about that, but we had family pics done when she was 6 months old so I'm not sure I need another set of posed pics.
@Bao: I know! I would love to do both, but I haven't even gotten DH on board with any pictures yet, I doubt I'd ever convince him to let me have 2 photo sessions! -
Can you do a cake smash as the party so that you have professional pics of both?

Did you consider doing a cake smash AT the birthday party? That's what I'm doing!
Otherwise I like the idea of doing a few family shots and cake smash just because you're having a smaller party it won't be as stressful to have people take pictures.

@photojane: She will be having a cake to 'smash' at her party, though I'm not sure how interested she will be in it! The reason I though of a photographer was so that we could capture her actual 1st birthday cake instead of a prop one.... I'm just torn.

Cake Smash! My inlaws would never understand me hiring a photographer for a family birthday party, and I have multiple relatives who take really great photos, so I'd just get their photos from the party.

I chose cake smash. We're having a smaller party as well and while I'm doing decorations and have lots up my sleeve, I just feel like a dedicated photoshoot would be more commemorative. I also feel like a cake smash with a back drop and fancy decorations would be more fun and photo-worthy than a cake smash in a high chair.

I voted for cake smash shoot - my kids were extremely overwhemed at their parties and had a deer in the headlights look the whole time. Unless I had a lot of DIY details that I wanted captured, I wouldn't hire the pro for the party. We had an in-studio shoot to commemorate the 1 yr mark, although we dressed them in cute clothes, not cake smash.

We're doing the cake smash before her party and getting family shots then too.
When G turned 1 he just so happened to be not feeling well the day of his party and didn't even touch his cake.
Figure doing it before hand is a safer bet that P will be happy and active!

Do you have a camera that you could do your own cake smash pictures? Since DD tends to clam up around strangers and I'm decent with my camera I decided to do it myself instead of chancing that she would get stranger danger with the photographer. I also thought that if I could DIY the cake smash, then I could hire a photographer for the party.
