On Monday my DS (19 months) has a doctors appointment. It is supposed to be -14 degrees. My husband seems to think I should reschedule the appointment. I don't see what the big deal is. The car will be heated up before we get in it and he will be outside and bundled up for only the amount of time it takes us to get from the parking lot to the building and then back after the appt.
Thoughts? Am I a horrible mom who is going to freeze her kid or is hubby overreacting?

I'd take my LO, like you said heated car and bundled up being outside for a couple of minutes shouldn't be too big of a deal.

I voted take him. But now my concern is... How long will you be in the appointment? If you're in there for a while your car will get very cold again and you won't be able to warm it up before taking baby outside like you would at home.

@lavender: That's my thought too.
@MamaMoose: It's his belated 18 month checkup with vaccines...maybe 20-25 minutes? So the car would be colder again, but I would be putting him in his car seat with his fleece jacket, hat and gloves, and a blanket tucked in over the straps. Still too cold?

@Smar11: I think your car would still retain some warmth in 25 minutes so I say do it.

If I stayed in the house for cold weather Id never leave all winter. I start the car beforehand and bundle LO up good. I don't take her for walks in -40 degree weather or anyhing, but I don't mind bundling her up for quick errands

@Smar11: Yep, same here. I think our high temp for Monday is forecasted to be -15...before windchill. Hahah, oops.

I'd take him. You must be in the Chicago area?...seems like everyone is starting to brace for the cold early next week. I'm not looking forward to it!

Take him! It's been that cold here almost every day for 2 months and I have taken LO out pretty much every day!

Tell your husband there are babies in cold climates all over the world and they do just fine 
I'm Canadian and if we never left the house when it was below zero...we'd basically never leave the house between December and March!

@Smar11: I have an appointment for dd on monday and now I am freaking out... all the schools are closed an it will be -55 wind chill? She is 7 months and needs a shot... I am not sure what to do.

We'd be stuck inside for many months if this were the case. As long as they are bundled up good then you are fine. On really cold days I wrap him up in extra blankets.

We follow the rule of dressing LO in one extra layer than us when it's super cold out. I honestly feel like most kids are more affected by extreme heat than cold.

I don't know, -14 is pretty cold to me. It took a good 20 minutes for my car to heat up this morning, and it was 9 out.
Our forecast for Tuesday is -1 with a real feel of -43. I can't imagine that schools will be open, but I don't plan on sending Chloe... and I'd be picking her up in a heated car!

Thanks for all the replies! Yep, I'm in Chicago. It's not like we haven't had this kind of weather before, but it seems people (or maybe just my DH!) are freaking out about it a little more this time. Not sure why??

@Smar11: we are a couple hours north and all of the schools are already closed for monday so I actually rescheduled my appointment. Our clinic will actually be closed and I had another appointment with her that day at another office and they closed! I guess it is record lows -55 wind!

Just bundle. Maybe you can get a mask for his face, to make sure nothing is exposed in that temperature? But goodness, it isn't as though you're going to the zoo.

I wouldn't cancel.
People here are so freaked about the snowstorm that the grocery store had a line for carts today because they ran out, and they were selling out of bread, milk, etc. I think it's ridiculous. We live in Michigan! Wait a day and it'll be plowed and salted. "OMG but it will be cold! Below zero!" Um, yeah. It's already been that cold. Bundle up, walking from the car to the inside of a building is really not that big of a deal.

I think you should go... but I'm probably going to cancel my MD visits for Monday (second time I'm rescheduling my post partum visit due to snow). Our alley is already a mess and we're getting 6+ more inches of snow tomorrow. (Noone plows the alley so it is very difficult to get the car out of the garage). I may try to grab a cab or uber, but I have ruled out walking the mile given the high temp will be -10 on Monday.
