Has anyone checked in their car seat as baggage and NOT put it in a bag? What was your experience?

@Dolphin: We are planning on gate checking our umbrella strollers but are thinking about checking the car seats at check in so that we have two less things to schlep through the airport. We don't have the travel bags so I'm hoping for the best? But I'm nervous.

when we gate check i sometimes use a clear bag that the airport provides (i think they prefer i don't though... haha) and when we actually check the carseat they usually put it in those heavy duty clear plastic bags before tagging it. you could ask about that!

I was reading that if you don't use the seat on the plane (which is recommended) that gate checking is recommended over checking with the rest of your luggage bc it's usually handled better & less likely to get lost.
Car seat blog has done some great write ups on safe travels with the littles.

We always check LO's carseat and don't have a bag for it. Usually the airline has put it in a clear bag (JetBlue always has, I think Delta did once, and did not another time), but it's been fine when it didn't have a bag.

We checked a car seat and it was put in a clear plastic bag for us (virgin america). They also mentioned that all travel paraphernalia (like portable crib, etc) could be checked for free though YMMV with friendliness of check in dude.

We also use the clear bag that the aiport provides. If you gate check they sometimes they don't have it at the gate... you can ask for one when you get your tickets / check bags at the front, if you checking it there anyways that should work out well for you.

We have always checked at baggage due to convenience and used the plastic bag provided by the airline. However I agree that it may be handled slightly better at the gate, and be sure to check the condition of the foam after you have arrived. We had ours cracked once.

Yes and it was fine. They actually set it aside while loading it (my seat was where they loaded stuff so I watched). Then when we went to get out bags it was in a separate area because it doesn't go on the conveyor belt thing.

We have a graco snugride and then we bought a cheapie graco stroller on Craigslist b/c we did not want to bring our nice UB Cruz.
Hopefully all will go well!
