My daughter is almost two and we just turned her forward facing. However I noticed her carseat (grace my ride) says to only use the padded strap covers in rear facing mode. If I don't use them the straps leave a red mark on her neck and almost cuts if I pull it tight and am not careful. I don't understand why I can't use them?

I don't know why, but I do know if you don't follow their instructions it completely voids any warranty they have and if you were to get in an accident and the seat were to "fail" for ANY reason they have zero liability.

Could be they didn't pass their safety inspections in the forward position. In an accident, the straps would be taking the load of the baby moving forwards, where in backwards position, the whole back of the seat does the work? Maybe the covers affect how well they work?

So any suggestions on how to not have the straps cut into her neck?

I kind of pull my son's shirt up around the straps, looks goofy, especially with a tee, but I have the same problem rear facing, with the staps digging into his neck. Polo shirts solve the problem.

@T.H.O.U.: can you adjust the straps at all? I know FF, the straps have to be at or above shoulder height. is she close to the next level?

@sorrycharlie: I can check, but I don't think so. Its almost like she has a wide neck and the straps are too close together.
