We have a traditional changing pad on top of a dresser and have two of these awesome wipeable covers:

We also have a on-the-go diaper clutch that I love, similar to this one: https://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-Diaper-Change-Travel-Kit/

@MrsSRS: This is what I told DH will most likely end up happening but he said he wants a proper area to change our baby because I guess he saw someone else do it LOL... guarantee I'll probably mostly end up on the floor!

I use this changing pad on top of my changing table.
I have two covers so its soft like this one.
I then use these multi-use pads on top of the cover so I don't have to wash the cover if I get poop on it. Plus, with twins, one is always spitting up.
Almost everything except for the changing pad was bought from a fellow twin mom. She just gave me a bunch of blankets and such and the multi-use liners were included. If I didn't have them, I would use receiving blankets that was given to me that are hardly ever used. I don't think I would buy those multi-use pads.
ETA: oh, with DH's bad back, the changing table was needed for us. Plus, we live in a rancher type home (only one floor) so its easy to go back to the nursery to change their diapers. We also are cloth diaperers and use cloth wipes in a wipe warmer. Everything is around the changing table so its convenient.
Babies are getting very squirmy and I've had to use the floor for changes but DS hit his head on the crib floor posts. I started using the changing table today and they seem to be not as squirmy... maybe they just needed a change of scenery.

@Goldengirl: then go for a cheap pad, two of the fitted sheet style covers, and call it good!

Thanks for the tips everyone! If anything it helps me realize there isn't really a right combo and everyone does it totally differently, so that's helpful to know.

@Goldengirl: Your husband sounds like my mom. I was going to put a pad on top of a dresser instead of buying a piece of furniture for the sole purpose of putting a poopy kid on, and she basically threw a fit. (But I still don't plan to buy a changing table when we have a million acceptable surfaces in our house!)

@MaryM: Haha yes he's surprisingly been like that about a few things (like getting a diaper pail!). I think it's because I do research all day so I know there are acceptable alternatives, but he just sees what his siblings/friends/other people do and think it's the right way. I've learned it's not worth arguing about the smaller things

@Goldengirl: Not sure about other people but I ALWAYS changed LO on the diaper changing table. It is so much easier there since everything is set up there and if it gets messy then the mess is contained to one area

@Goldengirl: I only started changing H on the floor because she was too big for the changing pad on the table. I miss the changing pad.

I used 1, 2, and 4, in that order, bottom to top. 1 you need, 2 is for looks/fashion/to tie in with your colour/theme (so not 100% necessary), and 4 has been suuuuper convenient for those times when the baby messes. Which happens a lot at first. The back is waterproof and the front is terry cloth/cotton, so it's nice against the baby's skin. We bought six (2 packs) and were rotating them out really frequently for the first several months. Using them keeps the cover (2) clean and you rarely need to wash it. We wash ours every couple of weeks or less. We also only bought one. That setup might not work for everyone, but it's what we found to be the best for us.
We still use the changing table exclusively at 16 months. LO even lays there to get dressed in the mornings when he's still pretty calm.

We have one of the first (pad) and two of the second (fitted sheet). Works great. Never needed the other two.

@Goldengirl: we used just the changing pad in between washes. Having LO kick and squirm ripped it and it looks horrible without the cover on it.

We just use a pad and a cover. Cover gets washed every few days. we have 3 covers, 2 would be sufficient though.
Fwiw, I change wherever I am but DH likes to change on the pad. Now that I have a toddler though all poops are changed their - it's just too gross to do it elsewhere!

We have a changing pad, a BUNCH of covers (we don't have a laundry machine in our apt so only do laundry about once a week, and we went throguh those FAST in newborn days--2 would never have been enough for us since we could go through that many in a day if she had a lot of blowouts), and for those early days we also used boppy-brand liners that we could handwash in the bathroom. every diaper bag we've gotten has come with a travel pad so we use that when out and about.

@Goldengirl:
I have a pad similar to the first link, amd then 2 fitted sheet cover type things. We ended up getting a couple packs of pee pee pads from the pet store and would keep a pee pad over the changing pad. Our daughter was so good at peeing when you take her diaper off, and it took months before my husband got the hang of setting a clean diaper under the baby before you take the old one off. It was way easier to have the water proof disposable pads.
A lot of people I know say they never even used changing pads, but we have back problems and the changing table saved my back (or what is left of it)

With my first I used a change pad with a cover all the time for about 8 months until he was too wiggly to stay on the dresser.
My second has never, ever (not even once!) been changed on a change pad I just change her on the floor or on our bed!
