We tossed our disposables in a plastic bag in her room. Poop is flushed down the toilet (poop DOES NOT belong in the trash) and that cuts way, way down on the smell. I cloth diaper, so I'm used to tossing poop, especially once you get past BF poop (with formula poop, you do have to scrape it from the get-go). Not everyone agrees with that, but tossing the poo in the toilet means less trips to the garbage can for me (and also cuts down on the smell of my garbage in the summer).

@2PeasinaPod: No, I don't scrape BM poop out of a disposable usually (but she didn't poop at night either for very long). It's mostly solid poop that we toss. Or if she has a virus, I toss that in the trash so fast and get it out of my house, but we're dealing with tons of poop then. 95% of the time, we toss poop in the toilet.

We're also fans of the Ubbi. It's stainless steel and it is so nice using the same kitchen trash bags for that thing as we do in our kitchen.

For our first we had the diaper genie. It kept the smell inside, but after 2+ years of use it got pretty stinky when I would open it to change the bag. I even used lysol on the inside and that didn't help.

For this baby I got an UBBI. I like that you can use regular trash bags with it. No experience with use yet, baby won't be here until December!

@Goldengirl: diaper pail makes a big different to a regular trash can. Diaper pails control the odor and mess much better than regular trash can. Last time we used the munchkin one that dispenses baking sod each time. It broke recently after 4 years of use and so I plan to get the diaper genie for the next baby, its much better with odor control from what I've read in online comparisons

@Mrs. Champagne: what bags do you use with your ubbi pail?

I'm a first-timer, too--due next month. I got the Arm & Hammer munchkin from Amazon on the advice of some total neat freak/uptight women that I know who said they went through 3 or 4 different kinds before deciding that was the least stinky. It was super cheap (like $30 I think?) so if it's annoying I'll just give it to goodwill and get an Ubbi. I read on Lucie's List that for the first 6 months (before solids) you can throw all diapers in there, but after that there's no way around taking poop diapers out to the outside trash, daily, otherwise there will always be a slight stink. I'm super clean and uptight, so planning to do that. But by the time your babe is on solids it'll be summer Curious if anyone thinks this is all wrong! Obviously I haven't vetted the system yet.

Ubbi for life. It has some smell after 2 years, but we now do the same thing as @Mrs. Champagne.

@Goldengirl: the Ubbi is steel so it keeps the smell in! Definitely worth it in my opinion when you have nasty toddler poops!

We have cheapie diaper pail that's ok in LO's room (poop diapers get bagged before disposal), but we have a nice stainless steel trash can (the kind with a foot pedal that opens it up on top) with a cover in the kitchen, and that actually contains the smell much better. If I had it to do over again, I'd buy one of those for LO's room.

@Mrs. Champagne: aghhh I WISH we had a garage. we live in a third-floor walkup apartment in NYC with very little space, so your system isn't an option for us. sounds nice though!
@Goldengirl: yep, that's the one I got. I'll let you know how I like it once I have an actual baby to test drive all this fucking gear I loved the way the Ubbi looked, but I got this one because the fellow tiny-apartment dwellers I talked to said it worked the best for this lifestyle, at least for them. and yes, you have to order special bags to go in it--I haven't dealt with that yet. we have Prime and I'm just planning to use that to buy the refills--not as easy as regular kitchen garbage bags, but not the end of the world.

@Goldengirl: I know, also LOL to people suggesting buying multiple boppy pillows, one for "each floor of the house"

I used to keep my son's changing table in the bathroom, that way, there was no reason I couldn't get the poop into the toilet!

We had a system that made these diaper sausages, it twisted the bag closed between each filling. It still stunk though, when we opened it.

We have the Dekkor. We keep it on the landing outside the boys' rooms, no smell.

We have the munchkin. It smells awful when you open it but contains the smell pretty well. I have nothing to compare it too, but I have no complaints.
