Saw this on A Mighty Girl and had to share.
My LO absolutely loves reading. She will pick a book, hand it to us and back that booty up into our laps. Sometimes she demands to be read two books at once! haha
It warms my heart that she likes reading. So much of my childhood years were spent with books in my room.

Xander's only 5 months, but I HOPE he loves reading!!! I read soooooo much growing up and I think being an avid reader really helped me in school! Even now I love to read!
I try to read him a couple books every night and I hope he grows to love reading as much as I do!

@Mrs. Pen: @locavore_mama: Did you two do anything in particular to get your children to love books? Or did you just make sure to read to them everyday? What's the secret to raising a book lover??

My LO isn't here yet but I do plan on reading to him or her a LOT. My parents first language wasn't english but they told me lots of stories that they just made up, and I loved it. I was always a big reader growing up and still am. Hopefully I can pass this trait onto my LO!
DH can do the math/science stuff... hahaha

@Adira: haha to be honest we were not diligent about reading to her every night. It wasn't really a part of our routine because when she was younger she'd much prefer eating all her books while we were trying to read to her! We might've read to her maybe 2-3 x a week and not only at bedtime. As she got older she just starting pulling books off her shelf and asking to be read to.
So I'm not sure if there is a secret or maybe some kids are just book lovers and others are not?

DS is 10 months and started showing interest in books a few months ago. I read him 3 books before bedtime every night, and it's so cute to see his face light up when he recognizes the book.

We read before naps and bed And whenever else he grabs a book. We have books in each room and the car and he sees us reading so hopefully that all encourages a love of reading!

@locavore_mama: That's not helpful!!! I want Xander to be a reader, but he has both my genes (book lover) and Hubs' genes (does not read a book unless he HAS to)! I'm just hoping he takes after me more than he father in this case!

My boys love being read to. My 19 month old loves Brown Bear Brown Bear right now and brings it to be 1000 times a day and tells me "Wead!!!! Wead!" And my 4 year old could sit and listen to me read all day. I hope they continue to love books and reading as they get older.

E is happiest sitting on the floor flipping through a book. He has a basket of books available to him and always grabs a few and brings them over to us and plops down in front of us to be read to. His daycare teachers say he's the only one in the class who "reads" the books instead of eating them.

@Adira: hahaha DH and I are the same! I'm the book reader and he can't even get past the first chapter of a book he actually really wants to read! 
We have books all over the house! In her room, in the living room and in the family room. So it's always around her just as much as toys. Maybe that helps??? It's like IN HER FACE!!! haha

We read every night before bed. We also read on the weekends when I want some quiet time. She backs up into my lap, as well. It is so sweet. Right now she likes books with movement (flaps, hidden pages) but does seem to like them. She really likes pulling them all off her bookshelf...

@locavore_mama: Well, maybe that will work with Xander too! I have bookcases filled with books all over the living room, and he has a bookcase in his room with books, so I guess I'll just hope that being surrounded by them AND seeing me read all the time will just make him interested!

Yes! My LO loves to read and have us read to her. She brings us books all the time. It only gets annoying when she wants us to read the same book 5x in a row. She also likes to sit down with her books and flip through them and talk to the kids.
We don't read her a book every night before bedtime, but we do read to her every day. She has her favorite books and now she's getting to the point where she says some of the words with us, it's too cute!
@Adira: Do you have bright and interactive books? That could help. Also books with real faces of babies & toddlers.

@Adira: I suggest putting some of his books in your bookshelves around the house! We have a bookshelf in the kitchen and she loves pulling books off of there.

my LO is 7 months old and story time means he practices crawling all over the place, or reaching for the book and putting it in his mouth. we still read to him anyway, but i think right now he's not interested in sitting still for a book.

@Adira: We did exactly what @locavore_mama: did and cleared one of our bookshelves and put her books on it. We taught her where her books were and she always pulls them all out to read.

When did you all start reading to your babies? Like you guys I was and am a huge reader and I hope c takes after me. I'm wondering when I can start reading with her. We don't have a bedtime routine at all since she I only two weeks old and we never know which nursing session will be the last one before she goes down.

We started reading to her very early on, but it was basically just showing her pictures of simple board books, no routine.

we started reading to our lo when he was just a few weeks old. now, just shy of a year, he LOVES reading... he will throw a book at us and either climb in our lap or sit directly in front of us waiting for it to start...
i'm attaching a picture taken a few nights ago. i told him "pick out a night-night book" and he seriously thought about it for a few minutes, eventually choosing "brown bear, brown bear." he's serious about his books.

@Foodnerd81: we started at 3 months. That's when we started a bedtime routine and so every single night since, we read 3 books at bedtime. My husband and I (and now our daughter) THRIVE on routine.

DD is obsessed with her books. I think 'Where is teh Green Sheep?' was the one that seriously got her into it.
Oddly enough, her favourite book of the moment is my 100 Purees by Annabel Karmel cookbook. I think she likes all teh pictures of the smiling babies.
Second runner up is definitely 'Charlie Cook's Favourite Book' by Julia Donaldson.

@plantains: haha we have a small paperback cookbook like 3x6 maybe all about chicken. She LOVES playing with that cookbook for some reason. she always pulls the same one off and walks around with it.

@Adira: we do have daily story time (it's not at the same time every day as I don't want it to seem forced) but at his age his attention span for books is pretty short. I think a key is to not forcing it... I have nannyed some kids whose mothers MAKE them read and they hate it as a result. I think that's so sad! A little here and there works well for us. We also make it exciting by being interactive with his books. For example: we read the book Lets Dance, Little Pookie by Sandra Boynton and instead of just reading it - I have him do the exact same dance as the characters in the book and he LOVES IT. He asks us to read it over and over cause he loves the movement.
