First, I didn't know you could pick the gender from a medically ethical standpoint. Now it makes more sense to me how both JLo and Mariah Carey have boy girl twins. Although idk if they underwent fertility treatments.

Second, who gives a flying f*ck how someone else plans & conceives their family!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: if you do PGD they can tell you the sex of the embryos.

There are some things I don't want in my hands.
It's why my husband and I decided against PGD for us. However, I'm not one to knock how anyone else does things! Who cares if she picked the female embryo.

I think it's an ethically slippery slope. The idea of choosing based on gender, for no medical reason, rubs me the wrong way.

We have a gene variant that is significantly more likely to impact males (LO is impacted) and I still wouldn't do this. It just feels wrong to choose gender. What else will people starting picking?

I definitely wouldn't do IVF just for the sake of picking gender, but if you have to do it anyway, and you have a strong preference, I don't see the big deal. I think this is much better than when people have an intense preference and then conceive naturally with the intention of "trying" for a specific gender. Because that's setting everyone up to be unhappy (primarily the child).

I understand the use of PGD to detect any chromosomal abnormalities, but to use it to select the gender of the embryo you implant, that I don't agree with. I'm also irritated with how she came out and said she wanted to give John a daughter. Why not choose the best embryo? Why go so far to choose the gender because that's just what you want?

As someone who suffers from infertility I am offended by her coming out and saying that. I would be happy with a baby no matter what the gender is.

It's crap like this that pisses me off and gives misconceptions about infertility and the interventions people use.

@Truth Bombs: I agree. Some people have major gender dissappointment. One of my best guy friends is the 5th child because his mom kept trying for a girl. Her 6th was finally a girl. He's reminded all the time he wasn't truly wanted. Very sad.

We didn't really have a gender preference and fortunately conceived before moving forward with fertility treatments, so even given the opportunity to pick a gender we likely would not have. But for #2, I'd love to give this little one a baby brother.

@KT326: The way that embryos are graded is sort of generic enough that she could have had more than one embryo with the same grading. So just because she chose a female embryo doesn't mean she prioritized that over a better looking male one. We also don't know if she required PGD or did it electively. Maybe she had two perfect embryos who were genetically normal according to the PGD and she knew one was male and one was female. Why wouldn't you choose the sex you wanted if you had a strong preference?

Going through my own IVF journey, I had to give up a lot of the ideas I had had from childhood about the way I would create a family and what it would look like (3-4 kids, 2-3 years apart). I had to come to terms with the fact that we may be one and done because IVF is expensive and maybe it wouldn't work. The nature of Chrissy's infertility could be such that this might be their only child. If she felt so strongly about having a girl, I think more power to her for taking back a little control from the unpredictable, chaotic, painful (emotionally, physically) IVF process. Personally, I appreciate any celebrity that opens up about infertility.

@KT326: I get it, I do. I've struggled with infertility and my 2 daughters were conceived via IVF. But she's been pretty open that they've been trying to conceive for like 5 years or something so Im going to assume that they were using PGD for medical reasons and a fringe "benefit" was that they also selected the gender of the embryo to implant this time. I don't know, everyone has an different infertility journey...just because we wouldn't have made the same choice, doesn't mean hers was wrong, you know,

@Mrs. Pickle: @snowjewelz: We had to do PGD and told the doctor we didn't want to know gender of any embryos until after transfer. We wanted the best looking embryo, period. We ended up only having 1 good embryo out of 8 so it wasn't that big of a deal anyway. I was too worried about having 1 good boy and 1 good girl and how on earth we'd choose. That's why we left it up to the doctor.

I don't agree with having IVF JUST to choose a gender (I think I heard a rumor that's what the Beckhams did to eventually have a girl, but who knows if that's true). But if you are doing IVF w/PGD anyway and you aren't worried about choosing gender, more power to you.
I also don't see what her naysayers think they are going to accomplish at this point. She's very pregnant and it's not like she can go back and undo it.

Yeah, I paid a pretty penny to do IVF. It's not cheap, especially since my insurance has no IF coverage. If I had to do PGD because of reoccurring losses, I don't see anything wrong with choosing a gender. The information is there...

Naysayers just don't get infertility or having to pay for a brand new car to start a family...

@KT326: So maybe she had a few very good embryos and decided to implant the one that is now her daughter. Do we know how many quality ones she had? We all know (those of us who went through IVF) that it probably was very difficult decision. Whether it's gender or grading? It's all hard.

@KT326: I fall into your camp! I read that and felt super awkward.

I applaud her coming out and talking about her infertility but to say you picked a girl because you would love to see you DH with a girl and that you would probably have boys next anyway is weird. If it had to do with the fact that you didn't know whether or not you would be able to have a second she would say that, but didn't. I don't agree with having the option of choosing gender even if it is an added benefit to a process (IVF) which you are already doing.

I think there are other celebrities that have done a better job at opening up the topic of IVF then what she has done. I think Chrissy has just been vocal about her pregnancy as a whole. Like we did IVF, took x time, etc.

@sandy: Well, I think of you because you had a loss Sorry. I completely understand your reasons. I understand and support people doing IVF for genetic reasons, too.

I'm thinking people who do IVF for picking a gender.

@SweetiePie: @bluestriped bee: I never said those with infertility couldn't have gender disappointment. I'm infertile and I had some gender disappointment with my first. But I'm still not going to choose the sex of my baby if we had to do IVF.

My friends just did IVF and picked the gender. I don't think I would do it, but I see nothing wrong with it.

I cannot fathom why anyone else would care what another person chooses to do. If you don't want to choose to implant a certain sex embryon, then don't do it! I understand going through infertility must be incredibly difficult but I cannot get on board with people judging others for their preferences just because they didn't care what they had. Live and let live. They're not doing anything illegal or that hurts anyone else.
