@blackbird: so what are your secrets bouncing bunny? especially balancing a healthy lifestyle with being a mom? And you were totally one of the bees I was thinking of when I posted this
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Haha! Literally making it a priority. I find time to eat healthy and work out, but that means I don't really have a lot of time to watch TV.
Obviously Dh is super supportive. He eats what I make and doesn't complain that it isn't junk and doesn't beef about me going to the gym after work (although I've been getting up at 4:30 to go before work, too....I just have to make it happen). The biggie is that I prep food on weekends so that I have lots of easy solutions during the week. So instead of working out, then making dinner, I work out, spend 10 min doing dinner, then we eat. Dinners are simple, don't get me wrong. But we don't need a big meal 2.5 hours before bedtime.
Mental-wise, I keep focusing on the big picture. I was unhappy, so I started doing something about it once my back healed. I feel better, I'm happier, I'm nicer....all win-win. I'm modeling behavior I want my child to have, etc.
Tracking my macros and calories in MFP has been pretty eye opening. I used to focus just on calories, but I've realized that it's more than that.

@blackbird: Thanks for sharing. My DH is actually super into exercise and eating healthy right now, so he's not the problem Our dinner issue is different work schedules and me being vegetarian while he is not. He lost 41 pounds so far!
I am just lacking the motivation lately, but like you said, modeling healthy behavior for LO is what I really want to do. I'm just in a rut and am having trouble getting my butt out of it. Funny thing is I used to be the health nut in our marriage, being a WOHM has killed it a little though

HI!
Exercise is literally the only thing I prioritize right now. Over a social life, sometimes over sleep, definitely over "downtime". LO still gets up at totally random times but I can usually find a way to squeeze in a workout after her morning feed (4:30-5:30am usually) and before I go to work - yes, it means to bed early and not much fun in the evenings/TV. And yes still EBF so I am doing that in addition to feeding her/pumping etc. I only have 4x/week where I have that flexibility as those are the days DH does daycare drop off (I work 4x/week), but on weekends and my day off I'll still try to do something like go for a long walk while she naps in the stroller (last week I wandered around in circles for 2.5 hrs, she took a MONSTER NAP in her stroller). Like @blackbird I've been prepping food on weekends and the crockpot freezer meal thing has been a Godsend.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@cmomma17, Wow 41 lb! That's amazing! My DH doesn't mind eating healthy, but it sure would be a hassle if he was like, "aw, chicken and veggies again?!" lol. Oooo vegetarian...can't help you there!
Motivation is hard. I go to bodybuilding.com sometimes to read articles that are motivating. I also signed up for motivational emails. And i have a dorky list that I refer to to remind myself of stuff. Cause sometimes I do just want to give up and say, "oh i look good for having a baby. I can just buy new pants" but NO THAT IS NOT OK lol.
I started small, though. I had to take two months off because I herniated a disc in my back. I've been lifting for a month and now i'm getting ready to add cardio next week. I could've easily overdone it (and i wanted to, and i almost did, but i held myself back) and gotten burnt out. I also check in with some fitness minded friends. So if you're just getting started, work on the diet and don't do too much or you'll be too overwhelmed.
honeydew / 7091 posts
@JoJoGirl: You work out in the mornings?! Ugh - I really need to force myself to do that... I just love sleep so much. What kind of workouts do you do? At home, or at a gym?
@blackbird: So, you go workout after work - does that mean before seeing DD? I need to make working out a necessity, like brushing my teeth, but I just have so many excuses for every time of the day. After work is the worst, because I just want to see my baby, but then after she goes to bed is bad because I am just SO TIRED.

@blackbird: "So if you're just getting started, work on the diet and don't do too much or you'll be too overwhelmed." Exactly this! For me, it is so so so hard to not start everything at once! But I knew better this go 'round . . . so I am starting with the diet because (1) it will make the biggest impact in my health and weight, and (2) because it is the hardest thing for me to change! I would gladly run 5 miles a day if it meant I could eat a cheeseburger and fries every day. But that's not reality . . . and more importantly, that's not what I want my LO to see!
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@swurlygurl: Well, it's almost easier that LO gets up early to eat, because then I'm up. Not like I can sleep in anyway, you know? So if she gets up at 5am to eat, I am out the door by 5:30am and DH will deal with her (sometimes she goes back to sleep, sometimes not). It's trickier if she doesn't get up until 6 because then I'm up and waiting to feed her before I go and don't have much time to work out (my work day starts at 7:30am). But even if I go to the gym for a 20 min run, it's better than nothing!
Oh and to answer that question - there's a gym in my building at work. Sometimes I do videos there (Shred or T25), sometimes I take a class, sometimes I run. I also go to barre when the timing works out (at a different studio), but she has to be fed and me out the door by 5:40 for that to happen, which isn't consistent.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@JoJoGirl: I have T25 on my kitchen island just waiting to be used. I wanted to get the first week (or so) of dieting under my belt before I started adding more to my *self improvement* plate, but I am really looking forward to using it!
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
@swurlygurl, yes. DH picks her up and I go to the gym. I see her in the morning and I see her when I get home. I consider it baby-daddy bonding time :). They have a daycare, so I've taken her to that before, I just don't want to do it allll the time.
@mslipgloss, I'm actually looking forward to adding cardio next week!
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@MsLipGloss: Nice!!! I like it a lot - it's hard but not Insanity-hard. And 25 mins is doable. And totally agree with @blackbird about making one change at a time... doing too much, getting overwhelmed and giving up is not so productive, so small changes will win over big change to me any day
honeydew / 7811 posts
@blackbird: yeah DH has done an amazing job. He started with diet, then added exercise. He has about 5 lbs to go and then he'll be on to maintenance. He's looking pretty darn good! But instead of motivating me, it annoys the heck out of me! He preps all his own food everyday, which is tough for me because then I'm 100% on my own for my meals.
Maybe I need a dorky list? I love lists! I have MFP and am considering re-setting it and starting with a clean slate.
I get motivational emails from sparkpeople and I delete them without opening them! lol I also get emails from flylady telling me to clean my house and I ignore her too
My biggest problems are stress/over eating and lack of energy. Of course if I made my health a priority I'd have more energy right?
DH and I have very different work schedules so I can't get him to help with LO while I go to the gym unfortunately
honeydew / 7811 posts
@JoJoGirl: I definitely need to start food prep on weekends! or at least packing my lunch the night before. My LO wakes up at 5 am some days so it's really hard to sneak a work out in before work. Are you working out at home? Do you shower after?
I definitely don't have a social life, or tons of sleep, either!
honeydew / 7811 posts
@swurlygurl: I feel your pain mama!!! I can't wait to see my baby at the end of the work day, but by the time I'm done feeding him, playing with him, doing the bath and bedtime routine and feeding him again I'm DONE!
I can't figure out how to squeeze it all in!
pomelo / 5509 posts
@cmomma17: Can you ask DH to double the food he preps so you can eat it, too? Since he's already doing the work it wouldn't be that hard...
honeydew / 7811 posts
@IRunForFun: no, because he's a meat eater and I'm not. And because he's a dude trying to bulk up his muscles So he's doing a ton of protein like a bajillion chicken breasts and some fish. *gag*
He does make a big batch of brown rice which I eat off of.
pomelo / 5509 posts
@cmomma17: Ohhh whoops, sorry I missed that! Maybe he'd be willing to do one extra dish that you can eat too? Like a big batch of beans, or something? Or maybe hardboiling a dozen eggs at a time to keep in the fridge?
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@cmomma17: T25 is an Insanity-like program, but only 25 minutes a day. 25 without any breaks/water breaks . . . but I can find 25 minutes a day!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@cmomma17: We just need to pick a time and force ourselves to do it! It's supposed to eventually become a habit... right?!
honeydew / 7811 posts
@IRunForFun: I don't eat eggs either, I'm totally difficult
hehe
Beans are a work in progress. Right now he is willing to eat baked beans (aka beans covered in delicious sugar). I'm hoping his fitness/nutrition kick continues so I can convince him to love black beans, quinoa, lentils, etc. Or somehow convince him that big salads = big biceps!
@swurlygurl: that's what they say! I struggle because I don't get out of bed at the same time everyday, and LO doesn't wake up at the same time either. Each week is different because of DH's work schedule so sometimes I have to take LO to childcare, other days I don't (same with pick up). I feel like this thread is just me listing excuses!
@mslipgloss: ah! cool! so will it kill me?
honeydew / 7091 posts
@cmomma17: Those are my same exact excuses!!! Haha. I know my best answer is after she goes to bed - that's pretty much always the same and very predictable. But... tired! And... dinner! And... cleaning! And and and...
honeydew / 7811 posts
@swurlygurl: yes! dinner and cleaning! that's the kicker. I have to decide what to do with my limited energy each evening. Usually setting up coffee for the next morning, doing dishes, and washing bottles/pump parts are the most crucial things. Plus showering! I usually shower as soon as LO is asleep, because I don't know how long he will sleep so I get it out of the way ASAP!
We need to stop whining and come up with a solution!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@cmomma17: I don't know yet . . . I will probably start this weekend or early next week. I will let you know!
honeydew / 7811 posts
@MsLipGloss: good luck! I'm not a complete couch potato, but after multiple attempts I have never made it past level one of Jillian's 30 day shred. I'm betting T25 is tougher!
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@cmomma17: The difference is ShaunT emphasizes quality over quantity . . . I really don't care for JM!

I totally used to be buuuuuuuut, once I had DD, I just couldn't get back to the same place I was before. I'm trying to get there, but apparently this baby doesn't like me working out. (Seriously, 10 squats w/ shoulder press and I'm breathing heavy... really??)
cantaloupe / 6206 posts
@cmomma17: The only way I can work out after she wakes up is because DH takes her in the am and does daycare drop off. Usually she gets up at 5am and I feed her, put her back down and hope she'll go back to sleep for DH, leave the house between 5:30 and 6 depending what time she gets up, at the gym between 6 and 6:30, work out until 7, shower, at my desk by 7:30 (i'm quick) - then I pump and start my day.
papaya / 10473 posts
I'm working on it! I used to do fitness competitions and completely lived by these 12 super-foods/clean eating principles from Men's Health/Women's Health mags and Rodale publishing.
Annnnnd then I met my husband.
I've been grain free/eating clean again for 9 days now and lost 7 lbs right off the bat. I have just decided i don't have a choice. My postbaby weight isn't a healthy one, so this is my life right now. Somebody brought homemade pumpkin bread with cream cheese icing to a staff meeting today, and I told myself that at the end of the two hour meeting, if I REALLY still felt like I needed to have it, I could... and I didn't. Tiny victories add up!
Like you, my gym availability time is a little dicey because my husband works crazy hours. But starting this weekend, even if I have to stick the baby in the stroller and walk 6 miles, that's what's happening.

@grizz: oooh, like the Abs Diet? We have those books and were into that for a while. The one thing from the abs diet that stuck forever was my healthy breakfast of oatmeal with raspberries. Maybe I'll try to flip through that book this evening ...
Good for you for avoiding workplace goodies! Temptation in my office is huge! Is it cold where you are? I'd walk with LO but it's already dark both before and after my work hours and it's freakin' COLD here, so I'd feel bad taking LO out.
Congrats on your weightloss so far!

@MsLipGloss: Please tell me how you like those videos.....I like the 25 mins of busting it out.

@MsLipGloss: @Smurfette: I would love to know how you like them too! Right now its more feasible for me to do a workout video at home.
@cmomma17: Yes, The Abs Diet! I LOVE! We still eat a lot of things from the books, but DH has an awful sweet tooth. He's one of those people who can eat whatever he wants and never gain an ounce. It makes it so hard for me! I live in TN so the weather here is hot some days, cold others... but its always dark when I get off work. Boo I'm gonna have to be a weekend warrior as far as doing stuff outside with my LO.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
@Smurfette: @grizz: In that case, I will make it a priority to add them in as soon as possible. Maybe this is the push I need to start tonight.

@MsLipGloss: yes! Hurry up and review these workouts for the rest of us!

@grizz: I might need to take more of a weekend warrior approach too! Better a weekend warrior than not a warrior at all right? DH's extended fam is in TN by the way, Knoxville!

Hehe guys I've done the T25! Not all of them, as I'm trying to hitch a ride with a friend who is doing the 'real' program (and I do them with her when I can). They are hard, but videos are always kind of weird to me.. I used to do TaeBo and Billy Blanks just has that weird style... Sean T is kind of the same way. "I'M GONNA MAKE YOU SWEAT, BECAUSE I'm SEAN T. T! 25". You know. Anyway once I get over that, they are good - he does a lot of complex movements and I couldn't finish the 'total body' DVD the first few times I did it. Hard but not 'I want to die' hard. And I was sore the next day!
