I plan on using my BumGenius 4.0 stash for LO #2 and I suppose I will need to get new elastic put in so the leg openings fit snugly enough. However, I'm also wondering whether I should purchase new inserts. Are they able to maintain their absorbency through use by two children?

We only used 4.0s at night for LO 1 so the inserts were in good condition for LO 2.
BTW, I had a good experience with convertmydiapers.com for elastic repair!

@meredithNYC: do you sew at all? I was planning to pay someone to replace my elastic but when I googled it, it really sounds pretty straight forward and there is just a bit of hand sewing. So now I am planning to do it myself. I can send you links if you are interested.
I am planning to use the same inserts because I don't see any reason they wouldn't work.

I don't see any reason to get new inserts...although I get your point that they don't feel as fluffy after a while.
I replaced elastics on about half of my 4.0 diapers (the oldest ones from before my stash got bigger). I never sew other than very rare mending of a ripped seam. It isn't too bad - takes me maybe 20-30 min per diaper though so I did one or two per night and spread it out a few evenings a week for a month or so. The hardest/most important part to make it go smoothly is the attaching of new elastic to old and feeding it through. If it comes unfastened it's a pain to feed the new elastic through.

Definitely still using the same inserts! They still work great.
Fixing elastic LOOKS easy, but it was a huge pain. I replaced the elastic on 6 diapers, and then had to replace it on 4 of them again because I didn't secure it well enough. I'm glad I was able to save the money (got a GREAT deal on the diapers) but as someone who kinda sorta can sew but not really, it looks a lot faster than it was. Not hard exactly...just time consuming.

My BG didn't even last through 1 child so I can't imagine them working for two. We have hard water and they were just so stiff and grimy after over a years use. For #2 I made the switch to natural materials and they are holding up much better!

@T.H.O.U.: That is so sad! I would totally contact the company. That seems ridiculous, for a product that is supposed to hold up over time!

@T.H.O.U.: @Mrs. Lion: Agree, that is ridiculous! Mine are in great shape (covers at least - liners might be fine but just aren't as fluffy) still, but I would be pretty angry if they didn't last.

@meredithNYC: Yea, we did a Bamboo/Hemp flat that we replaced it with. I love them!

@T.H.O.U.: I'll look into those! We have a few hemp liners and I like them, so that might be a good next step.

@meredithNYC: I like the ones that are rectangles. I did a tri-fold for a baby and now that he's a bit older I'm doing a half fold.
The hemp doublers are good too. They matched up well with the BG newborn inserts (we had never really used those). I did a MF NB insert on top of a hemp doubler.

I saw a tutorial for tightening the elastics by just tying a knot in them. I'm hoping this will work because it seems way easier than sewing in new ones!

@mrs. tictactoe: This wouldn't have worked with the old elastic in mine...it was completely shot and not stretchy anymore at all. But if yours still have some stretch that might work!

@Mrs. Lion: I have to pull them out and check, but from what I remember, they still had stretch, they were just looser than when we bought them.

@Mrs. Lion: uh oh! thanks for the warning. it is on my list for february and baby is not due until july so if i try it and it is terrible, i will go to plan b. I am decent at sewing but i know how frustrating it is to have a project take longer or not go as expected.
I could possibly convince a family member to do it, though...
