I just realized that this week, I have had cold lunchmeat TWICE for lunch. Ugh. I guess that's on the no-no list, right?
Reassure me and tell me it's ok and you ate it all the time... lol!

my doctor said that as long as it was freshly cut (like a couple days old) from the deli (not pre-packaged) it was fine.

As long as I trust where it's coming from, I don't have an issue with it.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
My dr said it was fine provided you weren't eating shitty deli meat to begin with.
grapefruit / 4213 posts
My OB said it's fine, just watch the sodium content, but she wasn't concerned about Listeria. I ate it at least twice every week.
grapefruit / 4770 posts
My doctor said I could eat it 3x a week from a clean place. I haven't had any concerns.
Eta: I have a subway in my building, and eat it at least 2x a week. Cold cut trio or ham and cheese please!

My midwife said that I should avoid it, even deli meat that's fresh. I'm taking her advice!
pomegranate / 3565 posts
I ate it every single day for about 3 months! I rotated between subway, jimmy johns, Quiznos, honey baked ham, etc. I had major food aversions and sandwiches were the only thing I could tolerate. My doc said it wasn't a big deal. Her only foods on the no no list were raw meat and fish and unpasteurized dairy.

Ok. Well, I'm trying not to make a habit of it and if I remember, to heat it until steaming. But yeah, I had a Subway on Monday, and today I had some cheese, ham and crackers and it was prepackaged lunch meat (but one of those "natural"-whatever types).
Thanks

@MrsADS: I have had it occasionally and never felt bad about it. I tried heating it up too, it tastes really nasty if you do that, so don't do it. haha. I've found some good alternatives instead. I'll cook up chicken breast and use that on sandwiches. Or I'll do egg salad. Stuff like that.

I just finished eating a roast beef sandwich (I'm 32 weeks pregnant). I don't eat it a ton, but don't stress about it if I do sometimes.

My OB said as long as I wasn't eating deli meats from gas stations, I was fine. If you google for listeria outbreaks, they are all connected to fresh fruits and veggies, not the scapegoat deli meat (leave my ham aloneeeeeeee!)
eggplant / 11716 posts
I eat it all the time, prepackaged and everything. That's not on my doctor's no-no list (hardly anything is), and the most deadly listeria outbreak in the US was a few years back with cantaloupe, with the candy apple debacle more recently---so I just feel like, lunch meat isn't so bad. Listeria can come from anywhere!
But ya know, I also drink coffee and eat soft serve and had real sushi.

Nuking it made me gag... so I only tried that once. I ate normal turkey sandwiches about once a week-- just meat I got from Costco or Trader Joe's, and Subway.
And like @Anagram: I pretty much ate everything normally, too.

I agree with the others, as long as you trust the source, no problem

I ate it all the time in both pregnancies. Never had a problem. My doctor never told me not to.

I was craving turkey sandwiches a lot for a while and ate it. I just can't imagine most things in moderation can be that bad for you.
persimmon / 1364 posts
My doctor said it was totally fine as long as it was from a trusted source.

All the time, my doc said you were more likely to get listeria from fruits/veggies than lunch meat.

My DH has taken all the food restrictions very seriously including deli meat so I tend to avoid it even though I am not too worried about it. I stick to paninis since at least the meat is warmed up but if I really want a sub I will have one.

I ate cold sandwiches a few times a week! Craved them like crazy for some reason.

The only deli meats I avoided were cured, uncooked ones like salami. I ate a lot of ham...

i ate a ham & cheese sandwich and turkey & swiss bagel sandwiches a lot. like, 5 out of 7 days a week.

My doctor told me to avoid cold much meat and I have with each pregnancy (I'm a first born rule-follower, what can I say! Lol). It was the first thing that I ate after having LO! I think you are totally fine though having it every now and then - I'm just super cautious. I've really been craving a sandwich though... I think in a few weeks, when I'm a little further along, I'm going to go for it. I agree that all the listeria outbreaks I've ever heard of have been linked to fruit and veggies.

I ate it all the time both times and have two perfectly healthy boys. It was one of the few things I could stand and actually craved.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
My OB laughed at the concerns over deli meat and told me not to even think twice about eating it.
nectarine / 2262 posts
Yeah... I agree with all of you, it seems like all the listeria I've heard about has been fruits and veggies, not lunchmeat.
I packed some chicken and rice for lunch which sounds totally gross... Subway sounds good! LOL
pomelo / 5220 posts
All the time... I don't eat at sketchy delis so I wasn't worried about it.
And I agree, listeria seems to be in spinach, cantaloupe and whatever else I've heard about recently...
honeydew / 7916 posts
I never eat deli meat and had to have it while pregnant just because I kept hearing not to eat it!
cherry / 156 posts
I ate it all the time without a second thought through both pregnancies. (But like @anagram I also went with "everything in moderation" including occasional sushi and small glasses of wine, etc.)
