I was told today that I would likely be induced with a cook catheter, or possibly with cervidil. I'm interested to hear people's experiences. Was the cook catheter painful? Would you choose one over the other?

I was induced with Cervidil. It worked well, and quick! I came in for my induction, they inserted the Cervidil, and I was told that the cramping would peak in six hours, and the insert would be removed in twelve. Well, 45 minutes later, I was in the tub, and my water broke, putting me into active labor. DD was born, vaginally, 12 hours later.

I was induced with cervidil, unsuccessfully. I went into labor but did not dilate. After 24 hours, they added the catheter, which got me to a three, and I progressed from there. I delivered vaginally about 24 hours later. I too was worried about the pain, but a very heavy epidural made the area totally numb.
Without the catheter, I'd likely have had a csection from failure to progress. I was truly not ready to deliver, and I would not have dilated with out it. I'd recommend it to anyone needing an induction for medical reasons - it was FAR better than a csection.

I had cervadil but no catheter. The cervadil worked quickly then they started a pitocin drip as I wasn't moving forward. Well...that sure did speed things up!! I had j just a few hours later vaginally.
A girl DH went to high school with got induced the same night but didn't have as good of an experience, he body wasn't ready and there were complications and she had an emergency c-section. Her daughter and j were born 30 min apart and we were induced 1 hr apart.

I had Cervadil also. It was not terribly successful and I ended up on pitocin after about 6 hours. I did end up delivering vaginally though.

I had 2 rounds of Cervidil and pitocin and I ended up with an emergency c section.

I had cervidil and a cook, both without an epidural. Neither hurt when placed. Neither really worked, either, but everyone is different, so take that part with a grain of salt.

I had cervidil. It was placed at 6pm, around 5am my water broke and labor started immediately after. I gave birth at 8pm that night (vaginally).

I was induced at 37 weeks after hospital bedrest. I had cervadil, followed by a cook catheter. The cervadil caused cramping and increased contractions, but it was manageable. The catheter, however, was incredibly painful when placed and continued to be quite uncomfortable as long as it was in. I was given something to take the edge off of that - maybe morphine? The catheter did nothing to help, and it was eventually removed. In hindsight, I wish I had just opted for an epidural earlier than I did, as once I finally gave in, labor progressed quickly.
As someone else mentioned, everyone apparently responds differently to these two things, so it could be an entirely different story for you.

I really wanted a med free birth, but when it came to the catheter, I asked for 'the biggest epidural possible'. I decided that I'd rather go vaginal than medfree, and the catheter sounded like the best choice. I'm glad I made it.

I had Cervidil, and had a good experience.
My water broke at 8 am, when I got checked at the hospital at 12 pm I was 1 cm with no contractions The Dr. said I needed to have that baby within 24 hours from the time my water broke so they were going to start Pitocin. I may have thrown a little bit of a fit... haha. The Dr then brought up the option of Cervidil. It was inserted at 2 pm, and he was giving me 12 hours before they would start Pitocin. 3 hours later I started getting contractions, and I was fully dilated by 12 am. I ended up having DD at 2:34 am.
I guess I would recommend Cervidil - I don't really know what would have happened if I hadn't used it. It's possible my body would have done it on it's own, but things were definitely slow moving before I got it (I had already been 1 cm for 2 weeks!)

@ShootingStar: I'm just seeing this! Was your induction pushed up? Is D on his way right now???

Thanks everyone, it's great to hear different experiences.
@mrs. bird: Ha, I wish! I'm being closely monitored for protein in my urine and high blood pressure. They want to try to get me to 39 weeks (scheduled right now for 2 weeks from today @ 39 + 3). But I was told each time I come to the hospital from now on (2x/week NSTs and weekly appointments) to be prepared to stay. I'm also thinking that I'd like to see about getting induced next week at 38 weeks instead. The OB yesterday said "Well you're not sick enough to induce today." And it made me think that I don't want to push my body to the limits of being "sick" enough to induce. I don't want my BP to be through the roof and be on a mag drip and end up too tired and sick to push him out.
And as of today I'm on complete bed rest - as in stay in bed lying down all day, only getting up to use the bathroom and eat, for 24 hours (after that just take it easy). Supposedly this will help my kidneys get rid of 3-4 pounds of excess fluid being caused by the high BP. Though I have no swelling so I'm a little skeptical at how effective this will be. But my BP's great as long as I'm lying down.

My experience was almost identical to @babyjmama... My BFF had cervadil though and ended up with an emergency c-section.

I had cervadil and it worked really well. I went from nothing to 6 cm in 12 hours, the nurses were very happy with my progress. I needed pitocin to keep things moving and ended up with a c-section, but I think I would have needed a c-section anyways because DD never dropped.

I was induced at just under 39 weeks for low amniotic fluid. I had 3 rounds of cervadil before being put on pitocin. The cervadil wasn't painful until the second cervical check and the insertion of the third round because it can make your vagina super sensitive. Once they started pitocin, I had regular contractions my water broke within 30 min. LO arrived within 12 hours. I think it would have been faster, but the nurse on day shift didn't check my cervix until the on call doctor came around 5 hours after shift change. As soon as the dr checked me, she asked if I was ready to push and I only pushed for about 15 min.
