As you can see I've got vacations on the brain tonight! We want to start planning for our big family vacation next summer (already-- so we can use miles to fly!). We live in a VERY hot climate and like to get out of the heat during the summer. I need ideas for where we should go and would love some suggestions based on trips YOU'VE taken! I think we'd like to stick to the US. We have done before:
New York
Vermont
Northern California
Asheville NC
Mountains of NM
Denver
Any great ideas?!

Nantucket / Martha's Vineyard or cape cod? We spent our honeymoon on Martha's Vineyard. I love that area, we used to live in Boston.

@travellingbee: what about southern/central California coast? Maybe too far? San Diego, Santa Barbara, Monterey, etc. anywhere up the coast is awesome & so much to do.

We did Sedona and the Grand Canyon last year and it was awesome. Those areas are actually cool during the summer (it's not crazy hot like in Phoenix). I think next summer we're going to shoot for the PNW (Portland and Seattle).
Washington DC would also be fun and cheap because a lot of the activities are free (zoo, Smithsonian, etc.).

@lawbee11: dude-DC is ridiculously hot in the summer. You will melt!! We are thinking maybe Portland, too. I've never done the PNW at all. I wonder if there's plenty to do for families?

@travellingbee: Seattle is awesome!! We went for a week when DD was 3 & DS was 18 months. Totally recommend it! Lots and lots to do!

We are currently vacationing in Aspen, CO and it is beautiful this time of year. The weather has been wonderful. It is warm, but not super hot and it gets down into the 40's and 50's at night.
We also did Seattle and Mt Rainier a couple of years ago. That was a great vacation too.

I'd say Vail, co. I went during august a few years ago and it's fabulous. I went with my nieces and they had so much fun. They have the most beautiful playgrounds ever! You could spend a week just visiting those. They also have the mountain you can take the gondola up to, the stream to play in, summer festivals, walking around the village, etc. I loved it! I didn't have kids at the time, but I'd love to go back with my own kids when they get a little older!

Northern Michigan (Traverse City area) is beautiful in the summer. Lots of sandy beaches and a very family friendly atmosphere. Shopping and wineries too.

@Finfan: I've thought about Michigan before too. I've only been to Ann Arbor in the summer but the weather is lovely.

You could do a northern new england trip! Boston, out to the islands, Portsmouth NH is a really cool little city right on the water, and then up into Maine. Portland is also a really cool little city on the water, and you can either go up the coast exploring or go west or north to a lake to camp/explore lake life. There are tons of islands and lakes up here so you can make Maine what you want of it.

@travellingbee: @Finfan: came to suggest my hometown of Traverse City also. I highly recommend renting a house on Lake Leelanau outside of town or another local lake.

Do a few state parks! Get out there and do some geocaching! I know that they are so beautiful. Your list makes me think you love scenery and greenery! 
Also remember that Canada is an idea for the future. Vancouver is BEAUTIFUL! How amazing a world we live in?! Thank you to everyone who has given great ideas here!

We've gone to Maine a few times and it is awesome. Stays a bit cooler and lots to do - Portland, beaches, canoe/kayaking (if you like that), hiking, etc. Also fun is Portsmouth NH or even getting up to Canada from Maine (I know not the US). Renting a cabin/airbnb type place is our favorite way to do it.

I second northern Michigan or the Portland area. Last year in May we did the Portland and the nearby coast and I would especially love to go back to the coast. We stayed at the Inn at Cape Kiwanda and it was a fabulous and reasonably priced hotel right across from the beach, all the rooms had an ocean view and the beach was so awesome with a little one.

Cool weather is usually a requirement for our annual girls trip and places we've been lately and loved - Lake Tahoe, San Diego, Portland (OR) and Central Oregon (Bend/Redmond area).

Another vote for the Oregon coast! Portland is an amazing city, but if you're really looking for cooler temps, the coast is the way to go. Beautiful scenery, lots to do, and neat little towns all along the coast.
