Are braces worth it?
If you are on a budget and found out you, as a parent, needed braces... would you forgo them? Figure something else to cut?
How do you determine if they're really necessary or not.

It depends if I need them for a good reason. I had them as a teenager.
If my teeth are destroying themselves, then I would get them. But just for being crooked I wouldn't if I didn't want to give up the money.

@Dandelion: What are the right questions to ask to determine if it is necessary vs cosmetic?

@pastemoo: if your teeth are rubbing on each other and ruining your enamel, or any other kind of damage they need to be adjusted.
If they're just twisted and overlapping each other and don't damage the teeth on the other jaw while eating or other things then its cosmetic. You can ask them outright if its cosmetic or necessary. Ask them to explain if it's necessary.

It would depend how much I would have to cut, and if the teeth or my jaw was getting damaged. I don't really know the specifics, but I think if you bite is way off, the teeth would rub against each other and wear away at the enamel, which would lead to bigger problems down the road. The jaw being misaligned can cause TMJ, headaches, etc.
I did Invisalign in my 20s mostly for cosmetic reasons. I was super self conscious about my smile, despite having braces as a kid (which is why you should always wear your retainer )I'm really glad I did, but I was young and single. It would be harder to do now I think.
ETA: For me, it was worth it, even though it took all my disposable income at the time.

@Foodnerd81: Thank you for sharing. @Dandelion: Thank you.
Looks like I have braces in my future (I've put it off for a year already). Retained baby teeth cause misalignment in my molars though my teeth look straight in the front. Grr. Bye bye money.

I have invisalign right now. I've always been very self conscious of my smile. It was actually kind of a deal-breaker for me. I told my DH I wouldn't be having kids until after I did it....because I knew if we waited until after we had kids we'd never really be comfortable spending such a large amount of money on it. I'm halfway through and so happy I did it.
I know it's a lot of money, but I feel like you'll be happy you did it once you start seeing results. Especially if your teeth are being damaged! Good luck!

I don't know how else to decide other than figuring out how much they are and how much can you can afford. I know my insurance covers 60%, so I'd get them if needed. I actually had a consult for Invisalign but my dentist told me the only reason my teeth were slightly shifting was because I needed my wisdom teeth out.

I would have needed 4 teeth (not wisdom) pulled before braces so I said screw it. My quote was around 2700$ and that was back in 2008.

@pastemoo: I had a retained baby tooth but had it pulled, the permanent tooth maneuvered down into place, and my teeth realigned during college. I know it was pretty expensive for my parents, but we were told it would cause problems in the future if it wasn't done. It wasn't fun, but I'm glad we did it and if I were you, I'd get it done if they say it's needed.

I had them as a teen, and it was absolutely necessary. I had a 10mm overbite. As an adult, I would consider what other damage could happen if I didn't get them. Prior to mine, I had a lot of pain in the roof of my mouth from my teeth constantly hitting it.
