I think I probably do this any way (only wear a small amount of the clothes that are actually in my closet) but I don't think I would/could actually get rid of everything else. I am trying to go for quality over quantity for future purchases, but it's hard because I feel like even with good quality/expensive stuff they end up pilling/breaking down--I must be really hard on my clothes shoes!

I kind of did this when we moved. I cleared out like 80% of my closet because either 1) I haven't worn the article in awhile, even if it is cute/versatile or 2) I was too lazy to unpack it at the new house. I lived off a small selection of clothes and it worked out well. I'm a year out and am starting to buy new shirts again because I'm tired of the same 7 shirts I rotate through.

But to help maintain the small number of clothing, I try to throw away/donate a shirt if I get one, if possible.

I really like this idea and am hoping to get it all organized this weekend!

@lovehoneybee: yes! I have some very questionable items I've been holding onto for no reason. Not gonna wear 5" gold strappy heels again, ever!

I already do. Probably less than that!

I basically already do this--the problem is I actually haven't thrown the rest away, it's just sitting untouched in my closet.

I really, really need to get rid of it all and just keep the things I actually wear.

@Littlebit: I have that problem too - "oh wow, this t-shirt is only $5 - what a deal"

problem is I don't wear t-shirts unless I am sleeping - such a waste of $$ and closet space

It's interesting. I have been moving towards this recently without knowing there was a "term" for it. I find I never wear most of the stuff in my closet. I have donated over half of my wardrobe over the past year or so. I'm just so done having crap I never wear laying around. I know I have more items than she suggests but I'm getting there. I find it hardest to bid farewell to sentimental tee shirts from events.

Am I the only one who thinks 37 seems like a pretty decent amount? I think if I counted the stuff I actually wear A LOT it wouldn't be that much. Wait... Does this count shoes?

I did Project 333 two years ago. http://theproject333.com/about/ I really liked it. It was easy for me since I don't have a special work wardrobe. I still like to purge and pack away seasonal items 4x a year.

I basically do this when pregnant, and like the simplicity. I have been wanting to try this for a while now, and plan on giving it a try after the baby comes.

I absolutely could do this. My sister and I challenged each other to use 10 items of clothing and use them for a month. We didn't count shoes, a black or white tank top, accessories like scarves or jewelry, or any work out clothes, in that small capsule. I chose one dress, one maxi skirt, one chambray shirt, one pair of white pants, one pair of dark skinny jeans, one white sweater, and 4 tops and was able to get a month's worth of unique outfits out of this 10 piece capsule. We actually took pictures every day so I know how it all played out.

A 37 piece capsule is more than doable.

I definitely could. I hate most of my clothes anyway! I need a capsule wardrobe service.

@MrsSCB: agree, 37 seems like a lot to me! I WAH though, so I don't need a special work wardrobe since pretty much everything I have us casual. I have a number of shoes, but many of them are heels left over from my office days, and I can't bear to part with them since I can still wear them when I have to dress up. I probably rotate through just 5 pairs of shoes though, depending on the weather.

I am definitely trying. I would like to have a set of 10-12 work outfits and just rotate them.

I don't like to include shoes/accessories in my count but just pants, dresses, skirts, tops I am creating a small capsule.

I plan to try this... I realized last year when I was pregnant that I actually had a much easier time getting dressed and was much more creative with my accessories when I only had so many things that fit me/so many maternity clothes. I am moving next month and I plan to ditch about 50% of my clothes before we do. I don't like them anyway, and I just think "what if I want to wear a purple shirt once a year..." The hardest part for me will be dresses, I love dresses and have wayyyy too many!

I probably have less than that. The downside, however, is your clothes are getting washed more frequently and wear out much faster.

I stumbled down the rabbit hole of capsule wardrobes earlier today and I think I might give it a go. I really need to purge my closet and get rid of the things that are just taking up real estate in my closet and drawers. I have a few questions though
1) If your capsule only includes like 5 tops - how often are you doing laundry? I need to go at least a week+
2) What do you do if you have a great skirt/top combo but it doesnt mix with the rest of the capsule?
3) When shopping for the next capsule what happens if you get a really great deal on a piece you love but its not for the next season?
4) Or you have ideas about what you want in your capsule but cant find them in the right color/style in budget?
