@Mrs. Tiger: That's great news. Have you tried thickeners with him before? Does he mind them? I used to work at a peds rehab hospital and I remember the therapists once did a training session with us and we got to try different brands of thickeners. I didn't feel like they had much taste. I thought it was weird drinking thickened juice, but since D isn't used to anything else, he probably won't mind it!

@mrswin: We'll keep doing the occupational therapy, and maybe will do speech therapy now that he's older... I think also having to deal with thicker liquids on a regular basis would help him get more coordinated? That's actually DH's biggest criticism of this whole process.. he isn't allowed anything by mouth, and then when they test him they're like, oh hmm, he's soo uncoordinated. of course he is, he never gets to try!

@Mrs Green Grass: I don't know! They recommended not using a commercial thickener until we get approval from GI (who we don't see again until Nov). The options they gave were adding rice/oatmeal cereal to milk/formula, or mixing applesauce with juice, or yogurt with milk. His formula is GROSS though, and he's technically not supposed to have any fruit/juice or dairy... so I'll be experimenting!

@78h2o: Our OT says that all the time, just because I think it's gross, doesn't mean he will She actually had recommended giving his (meat & veggie) purees in a sippee cup to practice but I couldn't bring myself to do it! We haven't tried any of the thickeners before.

@Mrs. Tiger: Haha ok that was kind of what I was thinking, if he's not allowed to practice then the skill will be difficult to learn but hopefully by doing the thicker liquids he will get the hang of it and eventually get to thinner liquids

@Mrs. Tiger: Great news! Congratulations to you all! A bit of practice with the thick liquids and he will be guzzling the thin ones by his next test, I'm sure of it!!!

Yay for D! They sell a flavorless thickener that maybe your OT can get ahold of for you!
It may be gross to us but D may be thrilled with the new flavor!

@Mrs. Tiger: Awesome! Good job little man! I'll bet practicing on thicker liquids will help him learn. Speech therapy can also do some swallowing exercises with him when he gets to that point. When you do try commercial thickeners, Resource Thicken Up is the best one I found. Once I got the ratio down, I used to put DH's water and the thickener in a Blender Bottle to mix it up.

@Mrs. Tiger: I think I might have mentioned this before, so sorry if I am repeating myself, but there is a water treatment for NPO adults to practice swallowing. I am not sure if it applies to pediatrics but just in case- http://www.kentuckyonehealth.org/frazier-water-protocol
I have been rooting for you guys!
