Is it cruel and/or selfish to pierce my 10 month olds ears?

No. I plan to pierce Harper's ears as soon as her ped will let me...I'd planned on doing it before 10 months:)
I had my ears pierced when I was 4, and it hurt so bad! I think it's crueler (more cruel?) to do it when they can remember. At 10 mos, she won't remember!

I personally don't agree with piercing an infant's ears. We won't pierce our daughters' ears until they are old enough to ask for it AND old enough to care for it themselves.

I just can't do it, I'm going to wait until she is old enough to ask for it and understand the consequences.

I have nothing against it but I am going to wait til they ask and can take care of it themselves!

in a lot of cultures babies' ears are pierced so i wouldn't say it's cruel.
i can imagine the day that olive asks for earrings.... oh what a rite of passage!

My neighbor has 3 girls and pierced their ears when they were 3-4 months. She says she always asks if they can pierce both ears at the same time by they always say no. Her youngest is about a year old and looks so cute but I'm going to wait until LO asks to get her ears pierced...and probably wait until she is 1st grade or so

I think it's fine, I understand many people don't want their lo's to remember the pain. But personally I'm going to wait until she asks for it. My Grandma and mom never wanted their ears pierced, so if my lo is the same I don't want to have gone through that for no reason.

I don't think it's necessarily cruel but sometimes the week or so after getting them done is uncomfortable so there might be some fussing involved. On the other hand they don't go through the fear of it or remembering it!

I don't understand why parents do this. Babies are high maintenance enough without the extra ear holes to swab, haha! And I'd worry about the baby tugging on earrings or getting them caught.

My mom had my sister's pierced at 6 months and she looked so cute in all of her baby photos, and my mom said she never had any problems. She said that I was the difficult one, getting my ears pierced at 4, because I messed with them a lot. I was old enough to know they were there, and at 4, had to keep my little hands busy I guess. Maybe that's why I'm so pro-piercing at a very early age....

I know lots of people who've pierced their LOs ears at a young age, but I personally wouldn't do it. We want to wait until LO's old enough to want them and responsible enough to take care of them on her own.

I've taken a few infected earrings out, seen some torn lObes etc. so our girls can pierce their ears when they are teens

Good god no. Aren't they adorable without jewellery! I'm with Minnie on this as well- keeping them clean and comfortable is hard enough without adding extra work! They can just go and get it done themselves when they're teens.

I know some people do it for cultural reasons but I don't agree with it at all outside of that. I will wait until LO asks for them and I can teach her how to take care of it.

I don't think it is cruel but I will wait until DD asks for it herself.

I don't like how babies and toddlers look with pierced ears, it's not for me. I'm waiting until she is old enough to ask to get them pierced.
