If you've had both a c/s and a vbac, which type of birth did you prefer?
If you've had both a c/s and a vbac, which type of birth did you prefer?

Interested in hearing the answers here. I had a C/S for breech with my first, wanted to VBAC with my second but the OBs didn't want me to deliver post-dates (as that increases the risk for uterine rupture) so I had a repeat elective C/S for my second on my due date. I plan to VBAC for the 3rd though, because I had a wound infection and a rough recovery with the second.
I heard from many women who had done both that they preferred the C/S - haven't heard anyone say they preferred the VBAC.

I can't weigh in yet, but I had an unplanned C-section after a failed induction with my first but am planning a VBAC with this baby. Guess I will find out soon FWIW I thought recovery was fairly difficult with my first but maybe it's because I was "in labor" for 28 hours before that.

Vbac! My number one reason for wanting it was so that I could pick up my toddler, but everything about the recovery was easier. Also, we want more kids and every surgery gets more risky, so that was also a consideration.

No experience, but I found out my hospital just started allowing VBACs so I am interested in hearing the answers!

I'm interested too. Had an unplanned c-section with #1 and my recovery was relatively easy. It makes me lean towards having another c-section, though I worry about the limitations with having a toddler. Although even after a vbac your recovery could be pretty rough. In the end I think it'll come down to if my OB and hospital allow it (it'll be a different one than my first since we've moved)

As a doula that has attended tons of vbacs, I'd say about 80% of my clients preferred the VBAC. Recovery is almost always easier and they got immediate skin to skin, etc.

@Arden - that brings up another point for me....since a lot of hospitals won't allow one, many vbacs are unmedicated, right? I definitely want my epidural!

@BeachMama: Most of the ones I attend are in the hospital, probably half of those are with an epidural. I recommend my clients wait as long as they can for the epidural though (at least 4 if not 6 cm) so the labor is less likely to stall out, because I strongly advise against the use of pitocin for a VBAC mama. It raises the chance of uterine rupture.

@Arden: that sounds really smart about the pitocin. I have only had a c section and my ob said I could try for a vbac if we have another. However, I really don't want to be in labor forever again just to end up with a c/s anyway so that is what puts me off a vbac although I like the idea in theory.

I had a successful vbac and preferred that! I've been meaning to post my birth story about it so maybe I will get it done so you all get more details. If not I will reply later after bedtime!

@Arden: My OB said the same thing!
I had an unplanned csection the first time and now that I'm pregnant with my second I asked her some questions regarding VBAC. She said they do not offer pitocin or any other labor inducing drugs because it runs a higher risk of uterine rupture. I will have to go into labor on my own if I want a vbac.
So interested to hear other mamas' input!

@shellio: Interesting, I haven't heard much either way so I've been curious.
@lilyann: My first birth was similar, so looking forward to hearing your story!
@Adira: Ah I forgot, thanks!
@Arden: Great info, thank you!
@Aimed: That's my exact worry also, don't want to "waste" all that time and end up needing a c/s in the end.
@creativemomma15: Would love to hear your story!

@Boogs: @lilyann: Don't worry ladies, I am working on the birth story! DS has been fighting a cold the past few days and its been a little crazy with him. In the next few days I hope to have it posted!

Just had my VBAC on Feb 19! So much better! The fact that I can play with my toddler and let her climb on me post partum means the world to me. If I had to keep pushing her away because of a surgery on my abdomen I know she'd feel so sad.
I have no real complaints about my c section delivery. I healed well and had no lasting effects. It's just te long recovery and no driving that made it a bad decision for me.

@keiki_mama: the membrane sweep worked for me to "induce" labour for my VBAC. We did it just oer 39 weeks and 7 hours after the sweep I was in labour.

I've had 2 c-sections, but considering a VBAC for my third. Definitely interested in hearing the pros/cons of both.

@Boogs: @lilyann: I just posted my birth story! Just a warning… it's long! I wanted to give you all the details

@BeachMama: Our hospital actually has a free doula program. It was awesome! I think they said they're only one of 3 hospitals in the US that have their own doula program, but my understanding from our doula was they'll help you however you need during birth, regardless of whether it's at home or in the hospital. In fact, my OB and anesthesiologist even let our doula come into my c-section when my induction failed. She took pictures for us and stayed with me while DH was talking to the NICU people. I'm sure @Arden: can tell you more details, though!
I love VBAC threads. Following this one carefully.

Had an unplanned C-section with a very bad recovery (wound also got infected and didn't close up for 8 weeks) so I am planning on a VBAC with this pregnancy. I even switched care providers to the only office in town that does them.

@Mrs. Blue: Wow your doula sounded so great! We have no pictures in the delivery room, but I wish we had someone there doing that for us.
