Those of you who have attempted a VBAC (whether successful or not),
1) what was the reason for your first c-section?
2) was your VBAC attempt successful or did you end up with another c-section?

Bump! I haven't had a vbac (nor am I anywhere near one, thank goodness) but I'm curious as my doc said I'm not a good candidate for vbac.

I wasn't a good vbac candidate based on reason for prior c-section (failure to progress - 4 cm after 57 hours from start of induction) and birth size of my first (10lbs).
My RCS was really great though.
Good luck!

1) Breech
2) Am 28 weeks so I still don't know! They gave me a 60 percent chance of success, if I go into labor before the rcs date.

With DS1, I ended up getting a c section for "failure to progress" at 4 cm with pitocin. I had a successful vbac with DS2, even though my old obgyn said it was unlikely I'd be a good candidate. They said my pelvis was probably the culprit. I switched to a vbac friendly practice and they were extremely supportive. I was augmented with pitocin because my labor stalled, but the vbac was successful!

1- fetal distress (underlying though were iugr and cord wrapped around neck)
2- successful!

1) emergency c-section 6 weeks early due to pre-eclampsia
2) successful VBAC. Went into labor on my own (after a membrane sweep) and had the baby 4 days before my due date.
At my postpartum appt with my first son, my OB was already telling me I was a good candidate for VBAC and was really supportive throughout my second pregnancy.

@Kimo: Were they more specific about what exactly it was about your pelvis that prevented you from progressing? With my first delivery I progressed all the way to 10cm and then pushed for around 3 hours before they determined that the head was not going to fit through my pelvic bone. My OB tells me that I probably have some sort of "pelvic misalignment" and that my likelihood for a successful VBAC with #2 is probably low. Part of me wants to try anyways, though. By the time I started pushing with my first baby I had been awake for over 24 hours and was so exhausted part of me wonders if that contributed to him not making it through.

1.) I developed a fever and DS1's heart kept descending after contractions. (was in labor for 28 hours)
2.) Successful VBAC, went into labor on my own at 37 weeks, had to use a foley bulb and Pitocin to help speed up the process though.

I guess essentially with #1 he got stuck in the birth canal and was a failed vaccum assist.
I did have a succesful vbac. In fact my labor and birth was so quick I didn't have time to get an epidural with #2. My doctor was also very supportive of me wanting to try for a vbac.

@Mrs.Scientist: Not really... just that since my LO was on the smaller end (6 lb 14 oz) and I wasn't progressing, that it was probably because my pelvis was too small. I feel like it was kind of a cop out answer in response to my interest in a VBAC. To me, a "pelvic misalignment" sounds pretty vague, but I'm no expert! I would encourage you to find a VBAC friendly practice if you're truly interested in trying for one. I was at peace at having to get a c section if it came down to it, but I'm really happy with my outcome! Good luck with everything!

@Kimo: I'm glad you had such a positive, successful experience with your VBAC. The whole pelvic misalignment thing sounds pretty vague to me, too. Due to my insurance I can only deliver at one specific hospital system, but hopefully I can find a new OB within the practice who is more open to a VBAC than my current OB. Thanks!
