As a former CVS employee, I applaud them for making this decision!

I love this. It is going to hurt their business but I would now choose to shop there over Walgreens.

Saw this on the news this morning. As a non-smoker I think it's great and makes sense with their new healthier brand image.

I think its great. I don't think they should make them illegal or anything, but I see no problem with them being harder to come by.

CVS isn't allowed to cell tobacco here already. drug stores can't sell tobacco products or blunt wraps. they're still very much in business here so i don't think it would be much different elsewhere in the country when they stop.

In Canada (or maybe just Alberta? Really not sure on that but I think it's across Canada), any store with a pharmacy cannot sell tobacco products. Of course, we don't sell alcohol everywhere either.

I think morally it is great, but financially it is stupid. They have made it such a big deal about building RIGHT ACROSS from Walgreens everywhere. So they will now be sending those smokers to your biggest competitor due to the close proximity they chose on purpose...not smart in my opinion.

I feel sort of Meh about it. I've never been a smoker and I certainly don't think anyone else should smoke-- but I don't really see the point of their not selling it. People will buy it regardless and they do sell lots of other unhealthy stuff.

I have no problem with private companies deciding what to sell and when.

@MamaMoose: Nah there are some big pharmacies, but lots of little hole-in-the-wall ones too and they all have to follow the same rules.

I think this was a great move for them. Good business and great values.

@LuLu Mom: i see what you're saying, but i think it may have a different effect. 'wellness' is a big business draw right now, aligning yourself with healthier choices brings in a different demographic and often that 'health and wellness' demographic tends to be one that's willing to pay a premium for what they perceive as the healthier, more elite option.

I'm all for it, whether it just reflects a trend or actually helps decrease use of tobacco! If I have a choice, I'll make it a point to give them my business. Sadly, I think we only have rite aid and walgreens in my town.

Makes me even MORE likely to shop there (although it's already the only drugstore I go to, because of their ExtraCare program. I saved HUNDREDS last year, got $12 extrabucks back Q4 alone. LOVE it.)

The issue I can see though is that, at least in FL, they can sell alcohol (beer, wine, and I believe liquor) in their stores. Couldn't that be argued to be not aligning with their mission? Although you can partake in alcohol in moderation... not sure there's such thing as smoking in moderation. I think smoking is a disgusting habit and am glad about their decision.

I’m sure CVS did plenty of research into the impact on their bottom line before deciding not to sell tobacco. Our local grocery store just recently announced they would no longer sell tobacco products either because they didn’t think it fit with their concern for the local community (or something to that effect). I don’t smoke, so I don’t really care either way. The trends are that a majority of people support stricter tobacco regulation, which I definitely support.
