Has anyone had a child not pass their vision screening at school? My 13 month old failed two different sections on hers yesterday, and she was the only one in her class who didn't test normal so it seems like a legitimate concern.
We are going to schedule her for a full exam in the next month or so, but does anyone have any experience with this?

As far as I know my daycare doesnt do any medical screenings. Our Ped did the "SPOT" test at 2 years old and she fell within the normal ranges. However, I am horribly nearsighted and started wearing glasses at 7, but i probably should have started much sooner. At LO's 2 1/2 check up our ped gave a referral to a pediatric ophthalmologist just to get a baseline and assess where she's at. I just made the appt yesterday and they're pretty booked for almost 3 months our appt isnt until the end of july.

@Chillybear: My eyes are horrible too. I think it was 6th grade where I could no longer read the big "E" on the chart, and they got worse every year after that until I was in my early 20s! But she is so young 
I hoped she would have more time before the bad eyes caught up with her

Our daycare does testing, but not with the babies. I think they start with the 2-year-olds.

Why would day care be doing a medical screening? She just had her first vision test at the pedi during her 3 yr well visit.

@Mrs. Lion: I know exactly what you mean! I hated wearing my glasses and getting contacts at 12 was the best thing that ever happened. I was sad thinking that when we go in july they may tell me she need glasses. What our ped really stressed was that kids have this ability to adapt to poor eye sight and dont realize or know to tell you they cant see well. The last few weeks I've noticed her blinking a lot - it could be that she just discovered that her eyelids work, maybe allergies are making her eyes dry or she's trying to refocus. either way i guess its better to know right?

@Smurfette: I think a private office came in to do a quick screening of all the kids, similar to what they do at the elementary school level (all kids here get tested in elementary school). It wasn't a full medical exam, just a check to identify possible problems.

@Chillybear: Yes! The day I got contacts was the best day of my life! I was so embarrassed by my glasses that if I had to wear them in high school because my eyes were irritated or something, I would take them off when I wasn't taking notes from the board. I was practically blind and would run into things but I didn't care because I hated wearing my glasses so much. So sad. I got Lasik about 8 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did!
I would definitely rather know though, rather than it just get worse and worse. Can they actually correct the problem if they catch it early enough? Or do they just treat it with glasses?

Knock on wood, no issues here yet. But I wouldn't be surprised since both DH & I need glasses and mine are pretty bad.

@Smurfette: I don't know about vision (I should ask), but our daycare has a private SLP come in and evaluate every kid and give reports to kiddos. Then, kids who seem to have speech delays can be referred to EI.

@Smurfette: Maybe it's not something they do everywhere? Here the teacher assistants are trained to do a quick screening of the kindergartners and 3rd graders I think? If anything comes up in the screening they refer parents to get a thorough exam. I had no idea they could do that with the little ones though. How do you do an eye exam on a baby who can't talk? I was a little surprised myself.

@Mrs. Lion: well I know for my daughter's vision test. She just sat in a chair and looked straight ahead. The nurse held some machine and it reads the eyes. I don't really understand how it works but they say it if it is off then they send you to a pediatric eye doctor for more testing.

@Mrs. Lion: I dont know if they can correct the issue or just treat it. I guess it would depend on the issue and the severity. This is the place we're going in a couple months and I found the FAQs interesting.

When i made the appointment, I asked the receptionist what the visit would entail and if there was any way i could prep LO for the visit. She said it would be a full eye exam including dilatation. She asked that i not practice giving her eye drops and that the Dr. is very good with young children and will guide her through the appt.

They used to do those screenings in my state in Kindergarten, but now a vision and hearing screen is required before starting preK. I know with mine, when we went for the hearing screen, they simply put a little device in his ear that measured how well he could hear without him doing anything at all; there's probably something similar for vision...after all, some babies wear glasses before age 1!

Our daycare offers vision and hearing screenings starting at 3 or 4. It's a private company and the parents opt-in by paying the screening costs. The screens are required for entering Kinder is my understanding. Our ped did their first screen at her 4 year well visit.

@Mrs. Lion: Any update? My 18-month old just failed her vision screen this morning at the ped. We're going to make an appointment at the pediatric ophthalmologist but I'm sure we'll need to take some action--I've noticed one of her eyes crossing a bit sometimes AND I have horrible vision.

@mfa_lady: we ended up taking her to a pediatric eye dr and they did a full evaluation. there was nothing wrong at all so that was good! they did say we should follow up in a couple years since my eyes are so bad, but we are okay for now.
