Some of our friends mentioned that their sons aren't night trained yet (most of our friends' kids are 5 or 6). I remember from some old Googling that boys often take longer to potty train than girls - does that apply to night training too?

Ds is 2.5 next month and is pretty much night trained. I need to buy a mattress cover for "just in case" and then we're switching to undies as soon as I run out of training pants! He's been waking up dry most mornings, or going pee once at night.

My daughter was "night trained" before 3. We didn't really train, she just started holding it overnight.

We day trained at 23 months. One LO was instantly night trained- I didn't do anything. The other LO was night trained by about 2.5. The only times they have accidents are during sickness or if they didn't drink enough water during the day (don't remember how that works but DH looked it up for me and sure enough it makes a big difference).

I've read (and I don't know if this is true or not), that you can't really train them for overnight. It's just something kids eventually learn on their own in time.

@Adira: yes, it's my understanding as well. It's supposedly something about the release of an enzyme, but I can't find any literature on that.
I day trained my son way later than I had planned (we missed a window when he was 2.5) but it literally only took two weeks when we did day train him at 3. He started waking up dry on his own at about 3.5.

@Adira: Yah I've heard that there's a physiological component... but I'm guessing that some older kids probably are physiologically capable of being night trained, but just haven't figured it out yet.

My kids transitioned to underwear only at night very easily (we did it during potty training without major incident) but my DD has a friend (6.5 yr) who still has to wear a pull-up at night. Apparently she is a super deep and relaxed sleeper. Her mom said the doctor said it could be as late as 10 yr old that she will have trouble at night. She also still has accidents during the day. When she comes over, I have to constantly ask her if she needs to go...
