Did the 5 S's work for you? And did you get the book or buy the DVD? I read the sample on my Nook last night, but didn't buy yet bc I wasn't sure if the DVD was better since you can see the techniques firsthand.

Shushing and sucking helped us. She hated the swaddle, though. She loved her pacifier until she found her thumb....whomp whomp.
I still do the shushing now for naps or when she's fussy. That plus holding her tight and swinging her back and forth (not rocking) gets her almost every time. Her eyes start drooping and BAM asleep.

DVD was best - I read the book but it's a little repetitive.
Really worked for us for naps and bedtime until he was like 10 weeks and could fall asleep naturally. He sometimes took a paci and sometimes did not. He hasn't particularly fussy so I didn't need to use it un-related to sleep (if that makes sense). Even now at 5 months if he's refusing a nap and really needs one - if I hold him tight and jiggle him and force the paci, he'll be out in 10 minutes.

I read the book. HBOTB worked for both of my kids, although some of the S's were more effective than others. For example, DD really needed super loud shushing and pretty vigorous swinging; DS really needed a tight swaddle. Neither of them ever really caught on to sucking, though.

Yes definitely. I tried swaddling after some desperation at 6 weeks and even though he put up a little resistance at first, my son LOVED being swaddled. That combined with the shhh (I used the white noise machine app on my iPhone) would put him out in about 3 seconds. It totally saved our sleep.

Get the DVD!! It is amazing. LO isn't a particularly fussy baby, but this was the best swaddling technique we found, and the shushing and holding him in his side also works really well.

Yep, worked for both our babes. There are tons of ways to wrap a swaddle, but the HBOTB way was the best for keeping them from breaking out. I got the book at my baby shower and just read it before they were born.

I bought the book on Kindle and then realized I wanted to SEE the techniques in action AND have DH see it too. He's not going to read the book, so I ordered the DVD last week. IDK if it's worth getting both, but oh well. I'd rather know these tricks and try them than not.
hostess / wonderful grape / 20803 posts
Oh also I never got the hang of swaddling. I always used the velcro kiddopotomus swaddles or the miracle blanket.

It worked quite well for us.
I had both the book and DVD. The DVD is enough. I would only recommend the book if you're the type who needs to know a little more about why baby is crying in the first place and why he recommends the techniques he teaches/why they work.

My baby is 9 weeks and the S's still totally work on her. Sometimes it takes a long time using them to make her fall asleep but they always calm her down quickly. I didn't read the book, we just watched the DVD. The DVD is only 40 minutes long so we even had my mom watch it when she came to help out. We love the S's so much!

This is awesome to know, ladies!!! Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to just get the DVD and watch it with DH! I'm so glad certain aspects of it worked for so many of you!

Not really. Hated the swing, hated the swaddle, hated the pacifier. Liked shushing a little, though.

@Rainbow Sprinkles: hahha love it.
It didn't work for us either. She liked the swaddle for maybe 3 days? Believe me, the head LC at our hospital who is super pro 5s tried and she said she's never met a baby where the double swaddle did not work. Until our baby.
I don't believe it works for ALL babies like Karp supporters think.
Def worth a try but honestly I would probably just YouTube for now. Then when LO comes if you need it buy it then.

We really liked the book.
My husband actually did really well with the methods. He could swaddle her and then bounce her around on her side in his arms while shusshing her and she would fall asleep for him 99% of the time.

C LOVED swaddling and shushing. She was swaddled from birth until she was 6 months old and decided she was done. She also loved to be bounced when she was a newborn.
I never wasted the money and bought anything. I ust researched it online and pretty much learned everything I needed.

It worked like a charm for our LO. Netflix has the DVD so you don't have to buy it.

I read and recommend to parents. It really works like a charm

My SIL gave me the book, so I never watched the DVD. DS is 4 weeks & so far likes them all to various degrees (we don't do white noise, but a loud shush from DH or I does help calm him). He loves the swaddle & "swing" -although not an actual swing, only when someone holds & jiggles him.
pomegranate / 3983 posts
Definitely worked for us! I really liked the book and that it had some extra ideas other than the 5 S's, but I did also look up some youtube videos to see the techniques.

We downloaded the video (shh!) and watched it after our LO was born. He loved the swaddle, sideline, shushing/white noise and the jiggling but the swing never calmed him down or made him sleep.

Definitely worked for our LO for the first few months. I never knew it was possible to shush loudly until we had our very fussy baby.

Someone gave me the DVD as a shower gift. It worked for us! He occasionally fights the swaddle but I always remember its best for him and he goes right down now. We use a swaddleme.

Definitely seeing it done helped us. I didn't buy the video though I just you tubed it! Read the book, but it did me little good until I watched the video of the writer Dr. Karp doing the 5 S's. It was this video:

I got the book from the library, and only read the two chapters or so that tell you what to do. It saved us, it was the only thing that stopped her screaming.
clementine / 943 posts
Don't waste your money buying the DVD- its on Netflix or its probably available for rent at a library. It's not something you would need to watch over and over.
That being said, the 5 s's worked very well for us. Especially swaddling and shushing.
grapefruit / 4110 posts
Yes! my son was the epitome of a colicky high needs baby and it was the only thing that worked. I wish I had found it earlier. We needed all 5 for him. We rented the DVD from the library because I had heard the DVD was better.

Loved the book - I recommend it to any of my friends who are expecting now. My biggest regret was not reading it sooner, like when I was still pregnant. I didn't buy it until LO was 3 weeks old or so and I should have been prepared on how to use the techniques as soon as he got home - it would have saved us many sleepless nights!

Definitely with both kids. Had the book but would recommend the DVD!

I've never read the book or seen the DVD! I shushed, swaddled and swung the LOs I nannied before I'd even heard that was a 'method'.
That said..my LO hates being swaddled. She loves her hands near her face, so I don't stop her. I do position her in a cradle hold with her body turned in belly to mine and swing her side to side (I swing at my hips left to right). I also shush, but I've found the white noise giraffe we have is the best thing ever. She doesn't wake up when it turns off, either, and it saves all my spit
She takes the soothie pacifier but self-soothed with her hands before I gave it to her. I'm a little bummed now that I didn't just let her suck her hand...would save me from replacing it!

Everyone's responses got me pretty excited that I'll MAYBE be able to act like I know what I'm doing when Baby Girl gets here if I pay attention to these steps! And @Heatherloveskenny was AWESOME enough to send me her dvd so I don't have to buy it (You ROCK and are so so sweet!!!!), and I told DH all about it and can't wait to watch it with him!
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Yup! Read the book and so glad I did - couldn't have survived first couple months without the five s's!!
coconut / 8861 posts
It's worked for us since 6 weeks old until now. Right now, he's not responding to the Happiest Baby on the Block at almost 5 months. My coworker brought up a good point that he's probably bored with it, so I'm trying to come up with another technique that will work for him to get to sleep. He likes to swaddle too.
