We have told one person what are names are. The first thing out of her mouth was, (referring to boys name) "that's a popular name, at least he won't be a unique weirdo or something" I wanted to choke her.

We kinda went over some names we were tossing around with our families and some of them got poo poo'd. We only decided on a name about a month before she was born and told people because I have a hard time not answering when people ask but with the name we decided on got very positive reactions. Once in awhile you'll see someone have a weird reaction to it because it's not super common but you can't please everyone, they can make whatever interpretations/ judgments/over analysis they want into our name choice, figure that's more of their personality quirk than ours.

Our son's name is super common and has been around forever (think something along the lines of "David" or "Adam"). We figured the worst we'd get was "that's boring," and we figured we could handle that, so we didn't really care about telling people the name.
The only person who annoyed me was DH's uncle who seriously went on for like 20 minutes about how we should name him "Nathan," because all of the Nathans he knows are smart.

@mamadopt: Wow. So many people would benefit from thinking before they speak. It's a lost skill.

Our families are notorious for having comments on names when a kid is born. Multiple teachers on both sides- "oh I had the worst kid named that". There is no way I want someone to think they can change my mind before the boy comes. I just don't think I could handle any negativity after taking so long to decide.

Other than myself and my husband, only my office-mate knows because he guessed based on a couple of clues. Fortunately he said it sounded perfect, when he heard it I got the most genuine smile, so I felt great! He was even a little surprised that we didn't pick a more unique name.

@mrsjazz: I actually really like that name, I think it is a really cute name.

No one has ever said anything to our face about our daughter's name, everyone always says it's a pretty name. Who knows about this time because we don't have any picked out yet.

@artbee: People are far less likely to make an inane comment when there is an adorable baby staring back at them!

I plan on keeping our names a secret (we haven't picked one yet), because I already had a bad experience with MIL disliking one of my girlfriends' daughter's name. She literally scrunched up her face and spat out, "JOSEPHINE?!" I like that name and would probably choose a similar name, and I don't care to hear anyone's reaction.

I had the problem where my mother had a million pets with human names - Charlotte, Jean, Emma - I got my cat from her and my mom had named her Frida. It seemed like so many names we liked were one of her pets or a relatives pet's name. We really like Emma or Emme and gotta say was kind of annoyed that when we found out it was a boy, my mother said she was relieved because of the pet situation. Really??? lol

We didn't get any judgement on the name, but we went traditional name and spelling. I think if you go for an out there name then you are going to get a reaction but by out there I mean you name your child Banana.

We kept ours secret and as pp have said, most people seem to be able to filter negative thoughts when the child is presented with name in place. The lack of filter before baby is born would be funny if not so horrendous, ie @mamadopt's coworker.

We aren't telling people DD's name until she is born because of that. When I named DS, EVERYONE had something to say about EVERY name that I had picked. His name would have actually been something else (I wanted Tucker), but I heard so much bad about it that I didn't go with it.

Its sad because its not anybody else's decision, but some people don't know how to keep their mouths shut!

We never told anyone the name we had picked because we didn't want opinions. When LO was born and we announced her name, the rudest thing anyone said was, "You picked an old lady name, why?"

@artbee: I LOVE my LO's name. I, too, like old lady things! And I bet LO's name will be super popular at some point in the future

I personally didn't care what others thought, unless it was something we never really realized, like say the name rhymed with Penis. haha..

Choosing a name is tough, and when you find the ONE if family doesn't like it, it can make it crappy for the both of you. I chose to tell my family and friends before, because they know no matter what they said we wouldn't change our minds. But it's really up to you.

@eupenmalmody - I think that is a wonderful name! I'm not sure why people would be giving you grief for it? that's crazy

we're not finding out the sex, but if baby is a girl, she will be named lola kay {for great-grandmother, lola, & then both our mothers' middle names are kay} & I have had one person straight out say something about how we're setting her up for being made fun of at school & why would we do that? I didn't take offense to it, just explained the family background to him. we've also had a few people who I could tell weren't enthusiastic about the name, but were raised better than to say they didn't like it. I don't understand why people feel the need to say ugly things like that.
