I did in the first tri, but since 2nd tri started I've had tuna salad on a bagel a few times. And it was SO YUMMY.
GOLD / pineapple / 12662 posts
Nope. I have had 2 or 3 (including one during my first trimester). I just don't eat them as often as I'd like.

i avoided tuna completely, but my OB told me I could have had certain types of tuna
grapefruit / 4120 posts
here is a site that has the different types. I think chunk light is OK!

Nope! My OB said that as long as it was chunk light, I could have about 12 oz a week That has been one of the things I'm craving, so I actually write down on my calendar when I eat it, so I don't overdo it!

I have chunk light about 2 times a month! My OB gave me the okay. I used to eat it like 2-3 times a week, so it was an adjustment for sure! I love tuna!

I'm avoiding it while we're TTC, but I had one yesterday! I hadn't had one since Christmas time, but I forgot my lunch & went to dunkin donuts & they had them in a bagel. Probably one of the worst places I could have chosen to eat tuna, but I did... And I loved every bite of it! stick with chunk light I think to avoid mercury.

I haven't avoided tuna, I've maybe had it every other week my entire pregnancy? My MIL ate a can of tuna every day when she was pregnant with DH, she gave me tuna for Christmas this year because of that. Yeah, she's odd.

I have had tuna a few times, although I have mostly eaten it at home. I have been somewhat worried about pre-made salads but feel comfortable eating it when I make it at home.

Nope. I had it when I craved it. I don't crave it all that often. One sandwich isn't going to cause a problem. 3 sandwiches a day? Perhaps.
persimmon / 1479 posts
I avoid them all the time, pregnant or not, lol.
I have been wanting some tuna noodle casarole though, so something I might look into before I make dinner tonight.

@mediagirl: made a can with onions celery relish and mayo! And gobbled it all uP! 2 sandwiches with a side of jalapeƱo chips!!

Yeah, my OB said chunk light is fine (avoid the albacore). I don't eat tuna that much, anyway, but I certainly won't avoid it in pregnancy.

I got a handout from my midwife that was very helpful. It had all the different types of fish, what you could have and how often. I could have tuna once a week, but salmon only every other week or once a month. Tilapia could be once a week too. But you can only choose ONE fish per week. I usually had tuna once a week. And like pp said, it has to be chunk light in water.
Here is a good guideline:
http://www.americanpregnancy.org/pregnancyhealth/fishmercury.htm
My midwife said that even though some fish says you can have it like 6x a month, make sure it's evenly spaced out. You shouldn't have tilapia one day, tuna the next and shrimp after that and say you used up your months quota. you need to let your body take care of the mercury inbetween fish.

@chopsuey119: Mmmm that's the best way to have it!!!
pomegranate / 3414 posts
Nope, actually having tuna salad for dinner tonight. I just limit how much/often I eat it.

@Coco Bee: Thanks for the info, it definatley saved me time from having to look it up myself. I am really disappointed I am going to have to put the shark back in the freezer for a couple months:)

@MRSKESSKESS: LOL!!!! I felt the same way about my swordfish. gosh darn.
kiwi / 545 posts
I had like. 3 or 4. They aren't something I eat on a regular basis so.when I craved them I ate them. I so would have married them if possible! They were just that good to me! Haha.

Nope, it was one of the few things that sounded good to me during the first trimester so I had it rather frequently.

Light canned tuna is fine, no more than 2 cans a week. Sushi-grade tuna, no way, though.

I have been on a tuna kick lately and glad to see this! I made a big bowl of it for sandwiches for DH and I throughout this week. I don't know how much is too much, but it is so good. I am going to make a sandwich now!
persimmon / 1035 posts
nope i read one to two cans a week of canned tuna is fine and good for you. although i don't even it have it that much because i don't always feel like making a tuna sandwich
eggplant / 11824 posts
Nope, I didn't avoid any fish during pregnancy, except ones like swordfish which the government brochure said to avoid.
persimmon / 1205 posts
Ooooh, I've so craved Tuna off and on. My doctor said to limit it to once a month or so because of mercury, but otherwise not a big deal. I've had a few, and they were delicious. I went totally old school with tuna on white bread with pickles. Yum!
GOLD / pomelo / 5737 posts
I had one in the first trimester. I was hungry and it was from a convenience store. It was that or lunch meat, and I thought I was being safe!
clementine / 994 posts
I'm avoiding it, but honestly it's mostly because tuna just doesn't sound appetizing to me lately. I've also had it withheld from me by family because they heard about high mercury levels (someone made tuna sandwiches for a picnic and made chicken ones just for me). I've eaten other types of fish, but not the big, mercury laden ones.
grapefruit / 4056 posts
I had my 1 can per week of chunk light tuna, and the occasional meal of salmon, or shellfish ... I love seafood!

It was hard to give up but I got quite strict on it for the pregnancy as this can be the effect of mercury exposure to a fetus:
"For fetuses, infants, and children, the primary health effect of methylmercury is impaired neurological development. Methylmercury exposure in the womb, which can result from a mother's consumption of fish and shellfish that contain methylmercury, can adversely affect a baby's growing brain and nervous system. Impacts on cognitive thinking, memory, attention, language, and fine motor and visual spatial skills have been seen in children exposed to methylmercury in the womb."

I avoided them, but I rarely ate them pre-pregnancy, and I've just had zero desire for one during. If I wanted one, I'd definitely have one.
clementine / 773 posts
I haven't avoided tuna, but I haven't had much of a desire for it either. I used to love eating fish, but I'm only been able to stomach it in small amounts since becoming pregnant.
GOLD / pomelo / 5167 posts
no i didn't avoid. I craved ham and swiss cheese sandwiches with hellman's mayo. and i did it! multiple times.
kiwi / 575 posts
No, I didn't avoid it or other lunch meats. For tuna, I just limited the amount I ate (one per every week or two) and for deli meat, I just heated the meat to steaming in the microwave right before making my sandwich.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
I have but only because I haven't craved them at all. I did avoid deli/turkey and had a heated sandwich for the first time last week OMG SO GOOD.
